I am looking for a new gaming machine, i currently have a desktop which is now dog slow with the likes of company of heros. so its time to upgrade, and i thought laptops are good nowadays maybe i should go for one.

so to you guys,
1. do you think its cool to get laptop gaming machine nowadays, do they provide ample power to run todays intensive games?
2. Is it worth going for intel over AMD? is it true that Intel run less power (Wattage) and faster then AMD?
3. Whos wins the mobile GPU race Nvidia or ATI?
4. what makes should I look at, obvious ones are Alien and XPS.

Also I supose what would be the minimum cpu speed I should look at? the price of laptops seems to grow very quickly when you start speccing them, so whats the basic requirements I should look at.

I would like to hear from anybody who currently owns a gaming laptop, and how they are finding them, hopefully you would have moved from desktop to laptop and can tell me if you are happy.

My only requirements would be a full size keyboard, and 2GB Ram, everything else is pretty much open to discussion. :)

1.) Yes. With the 7950 GTX, either single or dual cards you will be amazed.
2.) That is true, but for gaming, either CPU is going to be able to deliver ample power to rock.
3.) Right now nVidia, but I think we are at the end of the line for a while for them. Maybe the 7950 GX2 (that isn't scheduled anytime soon, like the 8800). I think after this you will see higher end ATI cards more likely than you will nVidia due to the heat and power consumption.
4.) I personally wouldn't look at Alienware and DELL. They are pretty mediocre machines with horrible support and customer satisafcation levels. Maybe check out the forum post on the Alienware Review on the m9700 Sli machine. m9700 Review Thread

I think for X2 Dual Core CPU look at the TL-60 2.0 Ghz, that is the fastest one they make (unfortunately) and if looking at Intel, I think the Core 2 Duo T7400 will be plenty. You can easily O.C. that to 2.6 if need be, but it has more than enough power as it is.

Your request for 2Gb RAM is no problem, in fact 3GB is available now, over that I really don't recommend at this time. I think the cost of these chips will be coming down over the next 6 months. Upgrade to it then when the OS can actually do something with it.

For gaming GPU's look at a 7800 GTX, 7900/7950 GTX card. Depending on your price range, the

thanks for the reply, since my post I have read a lot into alienware, and yes I think I'll be staying away from them. The only reason I was considering is because I thought they new gaming mahines, but now it seems its a lot of clever marketing.
I understand Desktops quite well, and always thought laptops were designed from the ground up as that model, but now I'm starting to realise that they too have a form factor based architecture, so although i can't really look at doing it myself, there are a few people out there building high end gaming laptops with all the goodies in.

My main problem now is choosing one, I need to understand what the base level I need is going to be. I realise you have a laptop sales company, so maybe you could help in that aspect. At the moment I want to be able to play company of heros and oblivion at full details. and I'm going to be looking at team quake and unreal 2007, stalker when they are released, I appreciate these can't be benched at the moment, so I guess a laptop that can be upgraded would be awsome.

I will also probably go though the motions of pricing it up against a desktop equivilent, and based on the cost vs cost I will then be forced to decide if I can justify a laptop version. (I need to be saving up for a new motorbike next year too!)
