THG - if you are reading this, please keep up the UMPC coverage & hype. UMPCs are good idea and I hope things mature and actually work. It seems easier to make a notebook smaller than to make a PPC more powerful.

Thanks.

UMPC is just for business professionals. It will be a big deal in Hospitals for Doctors, because of the touch screen you can have programs to write prescriptions and check drug facts on the fly. I can see other areas for the UMPC market to gain strength, but for your everday consumer, its not too important. The processors on UMPC's are equal to 2.0 Ghz (give or take a little).. Games will have a small market at first for this, but as Procedural Generation takes aim into the Gaming market, some low profile games could take advantage of the hardware on a UMPC... Other than all that, I wouldnt plan on buying a UMPC until after a few years. Don't wait up.

Ya,
I see your points.
There are also some "no-nonsense" people that don't want a drive spinning in their PDA.

PPCs and sub-notebooks are getting close to my sweet spot.

For a PPC to be useable, they also need:
a telephone - many already have this.
a good browser - not the retarded IE 2.0 looking browser. USELESS ON A 240x320 screen !!
at least 480x640 - some have this.
a real SD card slot - many PPC phones don't have this.
a 1.8" drive. I've seen this in lots of small MP3 players. Can't be that card to add.
3-D accelerated DX 8 graphics (this was promissed already). Why a PPC can't have games as good/better than a PSP?
The other office apps seem good enough for mobile work. (office-pdf, etc)
WiFi and GPRS, 3G, bluetooth, etc - necessary for remote connecitons.
simple video-out
A USB port for external hardware like cameras, hard-drives, mouse & keyboard, etc.

ALL THIS CAN REPLACE MY:
Mp3 & DIVX playter - The media player seems good enough - the hard-drive will make this so much better.
GPS device - the mapping and GPS seems good enough already. Just need that SD slot. Built-in GPS is better anyway.
Notebook PC - That is what I need for web-surfing and device connecting.

I understand this kind of PPC will be a bit bulky (slim PPCs already exist)

That is all I can think of. Don't know how many years I need to wait for this. I will get angry if I start seeing Symbian phones or Blackberrys do this first !

T0 make a UMPC useful:
a screen less than 8" - very few have this.
All software is good enough.
A pull-out thumb keyboard & mouse "OQO style".
Power like Pentium M+
Graphics like GMA 950+
1 gig RAM.
Every wire and wireless connection option possible. - Connect to the Internet via my phone & bluetooth.
8+ hours of battery life.
Able to run any version of Windows - even server 2007 if necessary (linux and OSX is always nice)
A phone - one less thing to carry.

That's all, getting close. 2010 ?

Please tell me if you think I've missed something important.
