I plan on getting a laptop for university but i want it to be a decent gaming machine to. I was planning on getting a Travelmate 8200 (2Ghz Core Duo, 2GB of ddr667, 256MB X1600 with up to 512MB shared). The mobility X1600 scores about 4100 in 3dmark2005 but the screen on that laptop is native at 1680x1050.

My experience with my current LCD is that they don't look good at non-native resolutions(or aspect ratio, at least). My 19 inch Samsung runs at 1280x1024 and when I play newer games at lower resolutions (1024x768 or 800x600), it looks really bad because the native resolution is the only one with 5:4 aspect ratio.

The future games I'd like to play on it are Oblivion and UT2007. Settings don't have to be high necesarily but I doubt that the Mobility X1600 can play those at 1680x1050. So, my ultimate question is: can a WSXGA screen play games at WXGA(1280x800) resolution(is the option available)?.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Also, if you have suggestions for other laptops perhaps, let me know!

We build systems that are native 1280x800 with x700 128 MB video cards WXGA.
We are going to be offering an x1600 with 256 MB at 1680 x 1050 WSXGA+.

One of the things we considered was the native resolution issue. You are correct that once a system is taken out of it's native resolution on a notebook it tends to have undesirable effects.

Even though 1200 x 800 WXGA resolution is what I prefer there has been a big push in the industry to move to WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050.

To me this resolution is small for a 15.4" screen, this is the resolution of a 20" desktop LCD for comfortable viewing. Not only, desktops with full blown video cards have a hard time gaming at these resolutions.

As for a sugestion of a laptop, of course I am partial to KillerNotebooks. With the x1600 model coming out in March, you have best of breed components that make one great notebook for a fair price.
