I have an LG 5350. It is not used much for talking--it is more for
emergencies. The most common use I actually make of the phone is as a
clock, since I don't wear a watch. :-)

After about a year, the battery life has gone *way* down. Originally, I
got three or four hours of talk time out of the standard battery. Now, I
only get a few minutes. It even starts getting a low battery warning just
trying to enter an appointment into the calendar, starting from a full
charge.

Are these batteries supposed to go bad this fast? Supposedly, they don't
have a memory effect--but this sure acts like it (the phone basically goes
with me all day, in standby, and then gets put on the charger overnight, so
it has had a lot of shallow discharges followed by recharging).

Where I spend most of the day, the signal strength is very bad...people
have told me that batteries drain unusually fast in areas of poor strength.
I haven't tried putting a full charge on and going to a good strength area
and seeing how long it last yet.

Typically, the life of a NiMH or Lithium Ion battery is 9-12 months. Go get
yourself a new battery.

In my experience, the LiIon batteries last about 2 years. My Samsung
phones and their batteries have a 1 year warranty. The original poster
said it's been "about a year". If it's under a year, maybe the battery
can be replaced under warranty. Or (less likely) maybe the battery is
OK and the phone is defective and drawing too much power. Either way,
if it's under a year, have it checked out at a Sprint PCS store.
