Hi,

I have a TT that I think is great. Before that I had a III then a V and then
a 505. I want to replace the TT but I am torn between the T3 and the Zire
72. I like to sync up email, diary and contacts with Outlook. I do use the
Bluetooth to SMS and email but both new models offer that. I use notepad a
lot and the contacts list. I'm not yet into digital cameras on portable
devices/mobile phones but that's probably because the quality has never
seemed that good to me but that's not to say I wouldn't use it if it were
offered. I would like to surf the net and viewing photos would be nice. I
may well look to play MP3's although this too is something I haven't done as
yet.

I like the stylish look of the T3 over the 'plastic' style of the Zire 72
but at nearly 260 GBP against 190 GBP is quite a lot to pay for style. I
also believe the T3 would fit my existing portable charger but the Zire 72
wouldn't (although at that price difference I could replace it!). I would be
grateful for any thoughts anyone may have that would help me in my decision.

Many thanks,

Hugh.

Well, the obvious differences are that the T3 has a 320x480 display,
64Mb memory and the Universal Connector. If any of these features is
really important to you, then the choice is obvious. (The T3 most likely
has a slightly shorter battery life, though.)

Also consider that the Z72 does not have a flip cover, while the T3
does. The lack of a flip cover is my only real complaint against the
Z72, for the rest I love it.

Thanks Laurens,

I was aware of the memory difference having checked out the spec sheets on
the Palm web site (and also the weight difference) but I have a couple of
128Mb SD cards that I use in the TT so I guess storage isn't a major factor
to me. How often is the extra display size and landscape option useful? I
imagine it may be better for web browsing but what else do people find works
better with the extra screen size? I was really looking for other owners
thoughts on the strong points and weaknesses of each unit.

A good cover is important to me though as I like to keep my PDA protected
and in good condition. The folding leather one I currently use with the TT
works well but bulks it up quite a bit when in my pockets.

Cheers,

Hugh.

Hugh,

I have had my T3 for a few months now. Before that I had a 505 and
IIIxe. Long before them I had a Psion, remember them?

I use the spreadsheet a lot and find the wide screen in landscape mode
very helpful. I Also like that fact that I can pop in the SD chip from my
digital camera and view the pictures on it. I find that it works just fine
on the cradle that came with my 505, for charging and syncing. In addition
to that the keyboard that I bought for my 505 works on the T3 (drivers for
it are on Palms site). There is one small quirk. When the keyboard driver is
turned on and you sync, it seems to have a lag when entering the password.
Simply leaving the keyboard turned off when not in use solves that.

I have the T3 in the charger everyday so I really don't know what the
battery life is like. I biggest gripe is with the Palm Desktop software
(Windows version). I run my screen resolution at 1600 X 1200 because that is
native to the LCD display. However using normal fonts make everything way to
small to see comfortably. I changed the fonts size to large font but now the
fields overlap and I am unable to see or enter data. Palm support suggest
changing to normal fonts as a workaround. Makes you feel like they are
giving one the around doesn't it. I would assume that the Z is using the
same desktop app.

FWIW
Jim

Check out the Zodiac 1 at www.tapwave.com full 320x480 screen with 2 SD
slots, 8MB ATI video card and lots more. I've had a Zodiac 2 for about a
week now it is hands down the best PDA I have ever had in my hands. All
metal case, big battery, built in MP3 support, and extra hardware buttons
and controllers. Very very nice PDA.

Well, another important point for you then is that the Z72's SD slot is
recessed too deeply, making inserting/ejecting cards unnecessarily hard.
(You have to push against the cards with your nails.) If you switch SD
cards often, this *will* start to annoy you.

You should also consider that the Z72, lacking an attachable cover,
needs a case, which adds significantly to the bulk. You can't just whip
it out to look up something quickly, you have to take it out of the case
first.

That all said, I still like my Z72 a lot. But if you can live with the
slider, I'd say go for the T3. Personally, I can't stand the slider
(which is why I never bought a T|T, even though I like everything else
about them).

i would wait til the summer is over and see what os6 looks like, and the
devices that run it. imho the zire line is still geared to the toy crowd,
not the serious business user.

I will wait until at least OS 6.1.
OS 4.0 had hundreds of bugs and was just a tweak of 3.X, OS 5.0 was a
nightmare and was just a port of OS 4.X, OS 6.0 is a total re-write. Be
afraid, be warned.
YMMV, IMHO, HAND

I've had a T3 for a few weeks now - had an M100 years ago. I had pretty
much the same dilemma as you, but the screen size coupled with the compact
size of the overall unit made my mind up. I have a 3MP digital camera
anyway, and couldn't see the appeal of 1MP pictures and no flash...

As far as cases go, I've just ordered a leather pouch from 'Tuff-as-nuts'
http://www.tuff-as-nuts.com/palm-tungsten-holster.html - I don't need to
operate my palm whilst it's in a case, so it's ideal for me.

If you use an online broker and are not particular about who it is, you can get
a free T3 from Ameritrade if you fund the account with $10,000. I did that about
3 months ago. It took roughly 3-4 weeks to get the T3. I use the T3 every day
for daily news via AvantGo and reading e-books.

Don't forget you're not just paying for looks. there's also the extra
memory and processor speed too. Personally i just upgraded a TT and
was trying to decide between the zire and the T3 - went with the T3
and very happy with it so far. I did read the zire camera, despite
being 1.3mp, is pretty bad...

Also, can you buy them (if in the UK) at argos and use their return
policy to change if you don't like it? In the USA all the major
office stores offer a no-reason return for usually 14 days or more.
That way you kind of limit your risk eh?
