V400 - Can't hear MP3 ringer

I cut a song I wanted to use as a ringer to just the chorus using Nero
Wave Studio, then re-encoded it to a lower bit rate using Creative
encoder so it woudn't take too much space. I got the file transferred
to the phone.I played it in the My Sounds area on the phone and it
sounded great. I chose Apply As a Ringer and called myself from a
landline and there was nothing but silence... Does the ringer need to
be in a certain format/bitrate/ etc?
Also, after I applied the sound as a ringer, I couldn't get into the
'Detail' menu for that style (Loud) ringer, so the only way to change
it back was to go back to "sounds" and select the default 'moto' and
apply it as a ringer. What's going on here?
