I've been looking this two laptops, as a development tool (large screen, 15" SXGA+ 1400x1050) and a silent/pleasant one as well (mobile processor, less heat, less noise from fans [ideally would stop when doing "typing" work], somewhat pleasant to the eye)

Both are p4m based, have no floppy and have a removable optical bay.
Differences (that I perceived)

Compaq EVO N800v: Mobile Radeon 7500 (32Mb), MB chipset ?!?, 2.92 Kg.
Aopen 1545: GeForce2Go 200 (32Mb), ALi M1671/M1535+, 2.6 Kg

I tend to believe that compaq has intel chipset, but I have found no proof of that.

It's very unlikely that I game with this laptop. With my desktop system, I only game once or twice a year. It's mainly for Java or .Net development, web browsing, terminal system (having half a dozen ssh shells open to control servers), and will be running Linux besides Win2K Pro or Xp Pro.

I've seen several benchmarks where radeon 7500 is quite better than geforce2go. However, this were 3D bechmarks. How about 2D behavior? Will they behave differently there? Do their drivers offer different applications that may be good for developers? (Like 2 extended screns, virtual screens, stuff like that)
Are there problems with a ALi as mainboard chipset?

I've searched for these questions over the web, but have found no answer that would clear my mind. Maybe users that have Mobile Radeon 7500 and Geforce2Go could post their tougths about their cards.

Linux Xfree support seems to be fine for both brands/models.

By the way, does anyone has a compaq that can report how does the fan work? Is it a single speed (on/off) fan, temperature controlled by bios? Is it mutiple speed? Is it silent or not?

Thanks
Joao Clemente
