Hi all,

Some months ago I posted details of a problem I had where a Palm V
wouldn't hotsync via a PalmConnect adapter with my new iBook G4. At the
time there were permissions issues with Palm Desktop install and I got
some helpful advice on that front, but still no Hotsync. I later saw a
post about plugging the Palm in via an Apple keyboard's USB socket,
prompting speculation that it was a USB 1.1 to 2 issue for PalmConnect.
Accordingly I bought a $7 USB 1.1 hub from eBay to experiment, and it
works. So I can confirm: if your machine has USB 2 ports, you need to
plug your PalmConnect serial-USB adapter into a USB 1.1 hub and then
into the USB 2 port before it will work. It's obviously a defect in the
PalmConnect firmware, because the iBook could see the adapter when it
was plugged directly, but the adapter didn't initiate a HotSync when I
pressed the button.

So - if you have the same problem, get an Apple USB 1.1 keyboard, or a
USB 1.1 hub (any one will do, powered or unpowered). PalmConnect
remains a bit flaky, but everything else works beautifully now, and
iSync is talking to the Palm, iCal, Address Book and my iPod without a
hitch. Now I can make my Windows colleagues envious again.

Thanks to all who helped!

Cheers,

Matthew.
