I just bought this Tivo Series 2 DVR last night. It seems to work just fine
with phone line. It successfuly upgrade SW version to 5.2.2... But after I
plug in a Motorola WU830G in the USB port, nothing has happened. The light
is on all right. But no setting in "Phone and Network" that suggests I can
enable Home network. Do I need to buy 1 of those "suggested/verified"
802.11 adaptor to get this Tivo DVR to open up that portion of menu
settings?

Thanks

It doesn't have to be one of the officially recommended adapters, but you'll
have the most luck with one that shares it's chipset with a recommended model.
Best I can tell, the WU830G is not going to be supported right now. Tivo may
add support in the future, but don't hold your breath.

Here's a list of wireless adapters that work or are known not to work with
Tivo. Some are confirmed by Tivo to work, some have been reported by users to
work, but Tivo hasn't tested them:

A few adapters were added in 7.1, which is not yet available for DVD-R units.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am not sure if my Tivo-DVR responds
properly after I have plugged in the yet-supported adaptor. I saw no option
or indication that it ever recognize this adaptor, that's why I am puzzled.
Is that true that until I plug in a supported adaptor, those menu will be
hidden?

Thanks again.

Yes, if the Tivo sees no supported adapter it won't even display the
network options.
