I was looking for a list of current, or recent receivers that supported
AC-3 RF as input, and I thought some here might be interested to know
that the Yamaha 'flagship' RX-Z1 and RX-Z9 support AC-3 in, as well as
coax. They also can apparently 'upscale', if I understand it correctly,
such that you can use composite/S-Video input and only have your TV
or monitor plugged into the receiver via component.

The RX-V4600 has HDMI in/out, which allows for 'upscaling', but
unfortunately does not have AC-3 RF in.

I tried looking around the pioneer site and could not find any references
to AC-3 RF input with their current line.

I'm also assuming that AC-3 RF in means there's a demodulator in the
yamaha receiver.

List for the RX-Z9 is $4500 with a street price as low as $2500.

I won't bother with Sony ;-)

My Pioneer Elite 49txi has a built in rf input, and I believe that the
current flagship the 59txi does as well. The next generations may well
not.

The Onkyo 989/Integra DTR-9.1 both had AC-3 inputs but I believe they
stopped manufacturing the model earlier this year..

So, almost current. :-P

I have the 59TXi which also has the RF input. The Pioneer Elite 27 and
29TXi, the 37 and 39TXi and the 47 and 49TXi have built in demodulators. It
is very likely Pioneer's next generation of Elite receivers will not have
demodulators.

Thank you for referencing the current and recent Pioneer units that have AC-3.
They don't state it so obviously (and don't show great close up pictures)
like the yamaha site does. Infact, you have to create a login to view their
manuals, though fortunately you can do that.

Do the pioneer 'upscale' signals? Meaning, if I run component to the display
and the LD in through S-Video on the receiver am I going to get a picture?

The yamaha seems to do that. I'm actually hoping to find a receiver with
HDMI and AC-3 in .. but, that probably isn't going to happen.

The Pioneer 59TXi will do this.
