Hey guys, my father is getting a free phone for being such a great t mobile
customer, but he likes his old phone, so he is giving it to me. It is 850,
1800, and 1900, so I think it should work with Cingular if unlocked.

phonescoop.com says it supports GPRS class 10. Will this give me the edge
like speeds with Cingular's MediaNet?

Thanks,
James Ayton, Jr.

No, just GPRS.

I was reading on the cingular site and it said EDGE worked with GPRS
technology. read here

http://tinyurl.com/dehcz

Maximum Flexibility
EDGE is 100% compatible with GPRS technology, which can help protect
your company's GPRS investment in an evolving environment.
GPRS devices work on the EDGE network†
EDGE devices run on GPRS networks†

Edge classes and GPRS classes are two different things.
My Motorola V551 is EDGE Class 4 (1U/3D) and GPRS Class 10 (2U/4D)
I see around 3KBpS in GPRS connections, 9KBpS in EDGE connections.
I don't see the Samsung x495 listed as being EDGE compatible.

The packet data part of EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for Global Evolution) is
EGPRS (Enhanced General Packet Radio Service), a forward- and
backward-compatible update to GPRS. (There is also a circuit switched part
called ESCD [Enhanced Circuit Switched Data], but I don't know of any carrier
that implements it.) EGPRS devices on GPRS networks and GPRS devices on EGPRS
networks work at GPRS speeds, the lowest common denominator.
