Sorry John, that's simply false. You're confusing "crack"
with "hack". A hack is a modification of original code; the
term "crack" originally referred to breaking codes during
WWII -- and that's exactly what a keygen does. So in
the strictest sense of the word, a keygen is a crack.
Part of your confusion is my fault; I assumed people would
know what is meant by the phrase "cracked version". I was
simply referring to a copy of PS bundled with its keygen.

Well, you certainly confused it by adding:
"A few cracks go one step further and
prevent PS from writing/checking for the AdobeLM disk
signature, which is very useful (i.e. doesn't require
reactivation -- even fake reactivation with a keygen) if
one frequently swaps hard drives."
Had you said "A few *hacks* go one step further..." I wouldn't have
made the comment, I was assuming you didn't know the difference...

I'm with you here. I upgrade every other version and since I'm currently
using 7.0 so I was planning on buying CS2 in the near future, but this
is alarming. I'm going to have to see if I can come up with a cracked
copy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to steal this software. If I can
get a cracked version that doesn't require this online activation (and
it works) I'll happily pay Adobe for a new copy just to be legal.

Well, it might be a false positive, I'm just unwilling to play around
with my main computer to find out.

Sorry, I'm talking about keygens -- the crack, rather than a cracked
version.

My desktop machine (well, actually 4 generations of my desktop
machine) have been connected 24/7 to the Internet since 1996. I have
had *one* minor virus problem, which I got from a WORD document I
received from a person working on a volunteer project with me (and
which was very quickly extinguished).
I don't, however, run either Outlook Express or Internet Explorer.

Ah, ok. My AV software warns me during HTTP/FTP transfer so
I don't even get as far as completing the download let alone
saving the file if it's infected. Maybe I was just lucky but
the first keygen I found was fine. Works perfectly. I paid
for PS6 - and the upgrade to CS - so I have no guilty
conscience about using a keygen to minimise the annoyance of
the Adobe activation system.

Except for the part of the OS that consists of Internet Explorer.
Remember Gates and/or other MS execs testifying that it was embedded
so deeply that it couldn't be removed from the OS? The external
app. part of Internet Explorer doesn't have to ever be used, but the
rest of it supplies functionality that some other apps. now require.
All the better for MS to ask not only "Where do you want to go
today?" but "Shall I tell you where you went yesterday?" as well.

All the keygens I've downloaded scan as dirty. Haven't tried running
them; maybe some day when I have a computer off the net that I'm about
to wipe clean and reinstall anyway :-).

Yep, that's the way I figure it. I have IE installed for testing web
sites I'm developing and for running Windows Update, but nothing
else.

I wouldn't bother when a clean keygen can be had as long as
you use a reliable source - but I'm certainly not going to
publish the URL here...
Not hard to find with Google, the one I use is by "Paradox".
That's too many clues already :-)

Not that I'd ever use one, but do they publish source code to those things?

I did this with my video editing software "vegas video 4". I bought a legal
copy AFTER a found a crack that worked so I wouldn't be dependant on the
software supplier to use this product.

Active X, dcom, messenger and remote registry are all examples of poor MS
security. Given that a cheap linux box can do anything the internet
requires, why even bother with a MS machine connected to the net? I just
saved my "last" computer (like what's a 2 year old used computer worth
anyway?) and use it for my internet machine. Actually the one before that
is being used as my router/caching nameserver! :-)

When you have such a big company, with so many divisions, the products
might as well be from other companies. OE looks like it is written by
people who have never used e-mail or usenet themselves, and don't care a
whit about the state of either resource, or the security of people's
computers. Its default setting of putting the cursor at the top results
in unintelligible top-replies, with all of the entire thread quoted
below where no-one looks, wasting tremendous bandwidth all over the
internet, and cluttering people's hard disks with worthless garbage.
The defaut of using proportional fonts in the reader makes all attempts
at making charts into a failure,

I hope I'm not alone in finding irony in a software manufacturer that
forces be to get a crack before purchasing a legitimate copy of their
product...

And the fact that a crack ALWAYS follows the release by less than a week.
Who are they kidding, themselves or their stockholders?

The photoshop copy you bought is a bootleg counterfeit that comes from china... All of these exact copies used to work, now all of them do not work because adobe has banned all the fake generated serial numbers!
I can fix your copy to work in 5 minutes over the phone for $25
