Fellow listers:

I'm going on an extended trip to Europe, visiting the following countries:

Serbia-Montenegro
Slovenia
Croatia
Turkey
Austria
Germany
Denmark
Norway
UK

I checked on cell phone costs over there and my knees buckled. I know
there's a way to get a phone with SIMS for virtually every country, but
this seems cumbersome and exhorbitantly expensive. What's the most
inexpensive option? Here I have CDMA Verizon service (very satisfactory,
by the way), which is a bit expensive, but vastly superior to TDMA and
derivatives. However, I suppose that means I can't use my phone (Kyocera
7135) over there.

Any ideas?

You guessed it. CDMA does not allow for roaming.

You might want to post your question on uk.telecom.mobile - more localised
for your requirements.

Yup.

How about a sat-phone ? e.g. Globalstar, Iridium, or Thuraya.

Correct, there being no CDMA in Europe. Europe is GSM/PCS only.

Roaming a CDMA phone is most definately not an option here in Europe,
their being no CDMA networks.

Very good for UK specific cellular questions.

I bought a GSM sim unlocked phone from http://www.telestial.com/ . They have
an excellent website that describes all the things you want to know. Of
course you don't have to buy their phones.

you could "unlock" your phone (if that's possible) and simply buy a
pre-paid sim card you can use while overseas.
How to "recharge" the pre-paid?
Well you go to any gas station and buy yourself credits.
very similar to a calling card process.

Another option is to buy a pre-paid phone over there and just keep
buying minutes using the process described above.

hope this helps and travel safe

Hello from Greece,
No, your CDMA phone will not work here. :(
Any dual-band GSM900/1800 phone can connect to networks in the countries of
your list, but I don't think you use this airband in the US.
If you try to buy a phone for e.g. UK it will work fine in UK, but it will
not be the same in the rest countries. In Europe only contracted 12-month
(or more) users can surelly activate roaming service and use their phone
everywhere. You should not be able to start such contract.
Anyway, I think that there are companies that will rent you a GSM phone and
account for Europe and would be the best approach for your trip. See
http://www.intouchusa.com

If you are visiting just one country you could buy a cheap phone or
sim-pack, but in your case it will be more inexpensive to rent one roaming
to all countries.

I hope this whole typing helped you a bit... Kisses from Athens Greece.
