I'm looking for a decent quality external burner, preferrably USB interface, at least 4x4xX, somewhere in the $200-$300 range. What has anybody had good luck with?

You should be able to get something that fits that bill for a lot less than that, in fact I don't think I'd pay more than about $175 for a drive that fits that description. I recently helped my mom get an Iomega 4x4 usb drive for her Imac, and it works okay, but not great, we did, however, only pay $100 for it. I don't believe you can get a usb burner that writes faster than 4x, as that is as fast as usb can move data. Actually, after a quick look, Pricewatch lists 1 8x4 usb writer, but it is an off brand, and I would not count on being able to write at that speed with usb. If you are willing to spend up to $300 or so, firewire is the way to go, even if you have to buy an adapter card.

The HP 8200(?) series seem to be good with a lot of people.
