I want to run a network connection from my home office pc in my barn (undergrown) to my house -- to connect a Turtle Beach Audiotron digital receiver to my living room stereo (to stream mp3s and internet radio.) Looking at about 250+ ft when all vertical drops etc. are considered. My router is a Linkys BESR41 V3. Any issues in making this run -- what Cat cable should I be using, any issues about running underground in conduit, etc.? Don't want any drop offs or the plan won't be worth it.

You could really just bury the cable in the dirt.. but use a conduit like PVC piping or something that won't let water get through.

If you're at 250+ ft.. while CAT5e will go close to 300ft, you really will want to use Cat6e. You can run that over 650-700ft. It'll be your best bet and probably won't cost you much more, if anything more than Cat5e.

But, you will want to seal your conduit once your cable is run. Use some kind of foaming substance that won't let water in. Even if both ends are in your house, humidity will get in there and water will condense. While it shouldn't hurt the cable, over time it can cause problems. Besides that, it'll keep insects and mice out, which could cause a problem with your cable run.

while youre running that long of a cable you might as well run 2, just incase.

I'm planning on wiring the house I buy.. figuring you can either drop it through the attic through the inside walls, or run it through the basement/crawl space, depending on what you have.
The only problem with dropping from the attic is it's hard to get to the outside walls.. same might apply for the basement/crawl route.

I'm sure having your house cat6e ready will give a small boost to your property value....

I ran Cat5 back in '99 for a company operating in a polebarn.. that jumped his property value up..

too bad he didn't let me use plenum or certify it for him.. haha. wait.. he didn't even pay me the agreed amount either.. hmm.

You could go wireless for less cost, by the time you consider cable costs, installation and labor.

this house was built in the 50s, you ever done any cabling in a house that old? i dont know what to expect. there is a huge attic, so that wont be a problem. im just not sure how much insulation is in the walls or if theres somthing i will have to drill through on the top of the wall.

You could take it with you when you move. And it has the cool factor.

My friend's house was built in the 60s.. the inside walls won't have insulation, only the outside walls. He has openings that he can drop most of his cables down.. some he has to drill a small hole to drop the cables. The walls should be easy to find in the attic though.
