Dell is giving a 30% discount on select CF cards. One is the 1 gig
Kingston normal speed marked down to $56 with free next day shipping.
But unlike the San Disk, which is also marked down, it has an
additional $15 mail in rebate. Two rebates per person, so I just
picked up two for about $119 including PA tax.

Since you folks have convinced me of the advantages of RAW and Photo
Shop, I'm switching to NEF and I just picked up a copy of Elements
ver.3, so I'll need the storage space. I have a fast 1 gig, a slow 2
gig, now these two slow 1 gig and a couple smaller cards, so I should
have adequate storage for my usual 300 or so shots per outing.

Anyhoo, just thought I would pass it along to anybody that feels it's a
good deal.

PS

The $119 is *before* the $30 in rebates, so the net total will be (God
knows how many weeks from now) $89, which I think is pretty good for 2
gig of flash memory?

Have you checked out NewEgg.com for current rebates on Kingston 1 GB cards.
I purchased their Elite Pro Hi Speed 1 GB CF card for $64 less $20 rebate =
$44 total. If this special is still going on, you could get your TWO *HI
SPEED* 1 GB cards for $88 instead of $119 for 2 normal speed cards.

Maybe the rebate is still on at these prices for HI SPEED cards, and it may
make sense to check them out. HI SPEED is really the better way to go -- USB
2 card readers can take advantage of its higher transfer rates.

About NewEgg.com: They shipped my card out right away, got it in a couple of
days, received my rebate in about 4-5 weeks time. They even sent me an
e-mail to notify me that the rebate was being processed. Then I got a second
e-mail from them after the check went out. All-in-all, good customer
relations.

I searched the NewEgg site several times and can't even find the elite
pro card in CF format. I did find the standard speed card just like
the one from Dell and with the rebate, it's about the same price. Dell
next day shipping is free but NewEgg doesn't charge tax, so it's almost
the exact same price from either one, so I'd still pick Dell just to
get it faster and use my Dell account. I have used NewEgg in the past
and found them to be excellent, so the best deal would decide for me,
but I think the rebate you're talking about must be over. If you can
find the Elite Pro with a rebate, post us a link.

So far, I haven't been able to out pace the D70 buffer, regardless of
card speed and as far as download speed goes, I don't stick around for
that anyway. I start it and go get coffee or play minesweeper. ;o)

Assuming the NewEgg price is the same, they will have the better deal
now. The 30% off at Dell ended yesterday.

Sorry, forgot to mention a point to address your specific problem. One time
I wanted to send in Farberware rebate. The rebate had to be sent in two
weeks from the purchase date. The product was delayed getting to me. I
called Farberware and got approval from someone that it'd be accepted
anyway. I attached a note to the rebate with an explanation and the name of
Farberware rep. I received my rebate with no problem.

I know. More trouble than it's worth.

Was that was a long time ago? I believe that Farberware was sold
to a foreign company a number of years ago and they're no longer
manufactured in New York but in China (or maybe Korea/Taiwan...)

Well, I canceled the Dell order and reordered from New Egg. To their
credit, Dell did reply quickly with a cancellation number, once I
figured out the right e-mail address and filled out their stupid
correspondence form three times. What a circus. New Egg sent me a
confirmation immediately and there was an '800' number included for
questions or cancellations. I think I'm actually pissed off enough
this time to sit down and write a letter to Dell describing my
experiences with them. I usually don't care enough to do things like
that, but I'm going to make an exception. My wife had great experience
with them through three computers and that's why I finally switched
from Compaq after three from them. I've purchased or attempted to
purchase three more things from Dell since that and have had nothing
but problems from the get go. They've always made it half-assed right,
plus I have an account with them, which is why I tried again. This was
the last straw. The hassle factor is just way too high. I've bought
on line for years now and Dell is the absolute worst in every respect
for the last year. A fine company gone to hell. Digital Photo Club,
Adorama, Amazon & affiliates, B&H, Compaq... even EBay merchants and
sellers, as well as many others have always met my expectations with
few exceptions. Dell has never failed to disappoint. Screw them.

Ordered a roasting pan November 2004 to be delivered in time for
Thanksgiving.

Farberware has a nice web site with good product descriptions. They have a
US 800 number and it's not a problem purchasing any of their products even
though the manufacturing plant may have moved.

My 25 year old stainless Farberware looks just about as good as the day I
got it. I bought a FW non-stick interior aluminum frying pan about 5 years
ago (?) and the inside finish is wearing pretty bad. Not what I've come to
expect from them. The stainless set says NYC-USA. The non-stick aluminum pan
say Thailand.

I think their NYC factory was located in the Bronx, but they're
long gone. My mother's FW set is probably at least 40 years old and
still going strong. I received a Revere Ware nonstick pan as a gift
about 10 years ago and the teflon wore so badly that I eventually
tried removing what was left. Heat must weaken it because with
steel wool I was eventually able to remove most of it from the base
of the pan (it took a *lot* of effort - I should have used
sandpaper). But the teflon on the sides of the pan just laughed at
the steel wool. So I capitulated and now have a little pan that
doesn't allow food to stick - to its sides. :)
