contract expiring

My contract is coming to an end here pretty soon, and I would like
advice on the best way to proceed. I've currently got a nice Nokia 6230.
I'd like to get a new phone simply because i want one that connects to
the bluetooth in my bmw and that will sync with iSync on my powerbook
via bluetooth. but i'm not all that impressed with any of the phones on
Cingulars current offering list. So, can what happens if i just let my
service continue at the end of that contract? will i automatically be
locked into a new contract? is there some way to make it month to month?

You won't be locked into a new contract. You'll simply continue the
terms of your contract, but it'll be on a month to month basis.

My advise would be to let it expire and have the peace of mind that you can
leave if you feel like it. The contract is designed for the benefit of
Cingular to keep you from switching. Except for a subsidized phone there is
no benefit for you to stay on a contract. Cingular will still continue honor
your plan without change. I'm still on an AT&T plan that I've not had a
contract on for three years. Cingular has still told me I can keep that plan
as long as I want.

If you don't need a new phone right now let the contract expire don't worry
about it.

I second JohnF's wisdom. Ebay is another method to acquire a phone without
contract extension.
It's nice being month-to-month because you can quit any time you like. If
you do quit and change carriers, initiate the process with the new carrier
so you do not lose your phone number.
