Brand spanking new Compaq nx7010.
First time attempt at loading a CD.
Noticed it was kind of difficult to close the CD drive but I succeeded.
Not only is the CD not recognized as being in the drive but I can't
eject it. No noise, no nothing when I try, except the optical disk
light flashes green a few times.
Paper clip trick does not work; I tried both with the laptop on and
also with no power.
HELP!!

Brute force! You need to use the paperclip AND pull the tray open at the
same time.

Obviously, based on the fact the tray was difficult to close, you hadn't
fully seated the CD on the spindle before you closed it.

HEY THANK YOU!!!!
I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CD OUT WHEN I PULLED ON THE TRAY AND CAN USE IT
NOW.

MY ONLY 'NEW' PROBLEM --- NOW EVERY TIME I TRY AND LOAD A CD THE TRAY
WILL NOT SPRING OPEN IN THE NORMAL WAY. I HAVE TO PRESS THE BUTTON AND
PULL TRAY OPEN. HOPE I DIDN'T DAMAGE ANYTHING...

Well, that not your *only* problem <g>...

Turn off your Caps Lock... In newsgroups, it's considered "yelling"
and, consequently, rude.

Thanks!

Sorry, I am new to this and thought I was only replying to the person
who's answer I was quoting. Was trying to 'separate' his answer from
mine.
I was shocked to see the post here in that format.
