While with sufficient ingenuity one might be able to, it's unlikely that any
significant improvement will be achievable since much of the performance of
speakers comes from the enclosure and changing the enclosure would mean
redesigning the case.

Your best bet would be a set of external speakers or a good headset.

Not really--I use a headset myself, and there the range is vast.

Check these two out (just google for them):

Creative Labs TravelSound i300

Creative TravelSound MP3

Very small and light, run on 4 AAA batts (+ provision for AC), and give good
sound & separation from what I've read.

Just ordered the second, the MP3 one. If the sound quality for its size is
half as good as the reviews proclaim, it'll be money well-spent (about $70-90
US depending on model and retailer). I must have read about 20-30 user and 10
pro reviews tonight before I caved; the assumption being that not buying is
better than the other thing.

I'll post here after I've played with it for a day or two, in about a week ten
