I am having a great deal of probs starting up windows xp.
I am taken to the safe mode etc page on some occasions and sometimes I am
advised "windows/system32/config missing/corrupted and sometimes system
starts ok.
I need a new prod key generated for my windows disc.
Any ideas where this can be obtained from

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=307545

For the product key, one of these ships with each CD. If Windows was
pre-installed, the sticker is usually placed on the tower (if a desktop) or
on the bottom of a laptop. If a retail purchase, the sticker is on the
sleeve that the disk was in.

Replacements: Purchase a new CD or contact supplier for a replacement/new
key. If Windows is at all bootable, there are programs that will extract
the product key for you. Several suggestions for programs can be found on
this page: http://michaelstevenstech.com/ViewKeyXP.htm

The product ID number is generated when XP is installed and can be seen in
System Properties on the General page.

In my travels, I have seen these error when a hard drive is or is going bad.
Might want to run chkdsk and/or a Manufacturer's app that can check the
hardware for hard drive failure. Just a suggestion...
