I currently run a Q6600 quad with 4 gb corsair mem on a 570 nforce board. I have dual evga 8800 gtx cards in sli.

I want to upgrade from my old btx mobo into a new case, mobo, processor, memory, and an x58 chip set. I have never overclocked, but would like to on this upgrade. I am leaning to a i7 920 and an evga classified. any ideas?

Also is the huge cpu fan from the first edition dell xps good enough to overclock on air? Also how stable are 8800 gtxs overclocked.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Upgrading in three to four months

BUDGET RANGE: $1000 to 1500.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming, Home theater, internet, many windows/applications running.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Keyboard, mouse, DVD drive, monitor, hard drive Graphics cards (already have twin Evga 8800gtx and 750 watt power supply)

PARTS PREFERENCES: I am partial to Intel and Evga video cards.

OVERCLOCKING: Yes – first time

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes - may want to go tri or quad in near future.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 1920x120 monitor, also will be running through a 55” 1080p LCD.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Will be my first time trying to over clock. Looking for a fast stable system and do not plan to over clock to the limit, just enough to make it faster and cheaper than going high end. Would not like to using water cooling and do it on air. Don’t know if I should go with an x58 classified or not.

To me the classified looks overpriced. The 3 way SLI seems as good for much cheaper if you dont want 4 video cards in SLI/crossfire. If you are buying good GPUs I cant see needing 4 unless you are going for a 12 monitor display or something crazy.

Graphics cards are kind of a problem right now. ATI 5870s and 5850s are the only high end GPU with DX11 and they are hard to find in stock. Nvidia wont have the GT300 series out until next year (maybe spring). Also EVGA doesnt make ATI cards, but right now everyone is still producing reference models so it really only matters for warranty (and XFX has the best warranty). You should probably stick with your 8800s until next summer when there will be competition with the high end DX11 GPUs.

Since you already have a quad core, Im not sure you will any improvement in gaming. Is there something in particular about your current system that you are dissatisfied with?

The research that i have done seems to suggest that x58 chipset seems to give better performace with the new processors over the core 2 quad. Right? Also the xps nforce 500 series mobo doesn't allow over clocking in the bios. So if I went with a better core 2 board and overclock I would have to get a new case as mine is btx.

"Better performance" sure, but if its only 5-10 FPS is it worth the money? Alot depends on the games you are playing and the resolution you are playing at. With twin 8800s you may already be maxing out the game and you will see no improvement.

I go back to my question - what specifically are you dissatisfied with on your current computer? Knowing that would be key to figuring out what will benefit you the most.

Games I am playing right now:

COD 4 - online, tends to freeze every so often.

Bioshock

Never winter nights ( choppy at certain points)

I am dissatisfied with not being able to overclock my system.

Have no idea if the cpu is bottlenecking.

I am only running it on a 21" dell monitor right now. I would eventuall like to 30". but untill then I have no idea if I can increase perfomance by increasing the resolution.

Can you edit your post in this format, as it answers a lot of questions that we may have:

You should also read the "balance" articles Toms is now releasing. It should give you some ideas. Different games react differently at different resolutions and even with different drivers.

Twin 8800s is respectable GPU power, so it is likely a CPU upgrade will help you out, but it could also be HDD or software/driver issue that is causing you problems. It really depends on the resolution (21 inch doesnt mean much, what is the resolution, 1240x1024? 1380x1050?) Higher resolutions will require more CPU and GPU power to keep up, it wont make things smoother.
