[Solved] 5750/5770 vs 4850/4870

Hi there,

Looking to upgrade from my 7900GS.

Having a hard time deciding whether I want futureproof but lose a little performance, or go with something that performs better but is not futureproof.

Current Rig:
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
Core 2 Duo E6300 1.8ghz (OC'd to 2.8ghz)
BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC 256mb
2x1gb OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum Dual Channel 800mhz (OCZ2P8002GK)
Ultra X2 550w - Link
24" Samsung T240

Games
Mainly want to be prepared for Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2 and pretty much any other pretty game coming out within the new couple of years.

Want to at least be able to run them smoothly at 1680x1050 with all the fancy effects on.

I will be upping my 2gb ram to 4b as well.

Alright so basically I don't know whether the money saved on going with the 4000 cards instead of the 5000 cards is worth it in the long-run. How long will the 4000 cards last me before I start thinking about upgrading again (I guess that depends on how many games utilize dx11) and if that longevity worth the $50ish savings.

I've been leaning more towards the 5750 though as it's significantly cheaper than the 5770 ($20-30 at NewEgg.ca). Does the performance gap between the 5750 and 5770 justify the price difference?

I used to have an e6300, that thing lasted me so much longer than i thought it would .

The 5770 is worth it imo over the 5750, since the 5750 is not really good enough for games. The 5770 is pretty close to the 4870 in performance (it probably would destroy it if it weren't for the tiny 128-bit memory width) but honestly for the future proofing i would go with a 5770. You could always crossfire if it starts lagging behind, but i think at that res. you'll be fine. Also to what i said before, you could also end up cross-firing 4870's, but then youd be spending too much money on old gen tech.

Hey, thanks for the reply and suggestion.

Yea that's what I was thinking too... and possibly by the time the 5770 starts struggling with keeping up, I think it would be safe to assume that there are new tech out already by that point... and the price of the 5770 would have dropped quite significantly.

Don't really want to crossfire right now as my psu isn't powerful enough... I'm an Ultra X-series fan and their 600w+ X4 series is way out of my price range.

A single 5770 should still be good enough with that cpu at that res. When i still had a e6300 i used an 8800 GTS 640mb. It lasted me till now with everything on high at 1680 x 1050, so a stronger 5770 should be great.

And the reason i say until now is b/c i have a larger monitor with higher res, so i just went and built a completely new system.

I think you'll be pleased with that 5770. I want to get a 5870, but im stuck with this GTX 295 :pfff:

I'd go with a 5770, you can always get a second when it start getting a little outdated.

Really no such thing as "future proofing". You said you want to run with everything turned on at 16x10. The only card you listed that will help you in this is the 4870 1gig card. Everything else is a failure. Go on line and check out as many benchmarks as you can and read all the articles 'carefully'. The 5770 may come close to the 4870 in specific numbers but NOT in performance.

No such thing as future proofing? How does that work?

I guess... but imo having a next gen dx11 card is worth 3 fps and a slightly lower benchmark. Plus theres always overclocking

Aren't most of the new GFX cards PCI-E 2.0 x16? I think the GA-965S-DS3 only supports PCI-E x16 and not the 2.0 version?

x 16 is 2.0, the old PCIe slots could only go x8 i think
