I have been trying to get remote assistance connection with my son who lives 70 miles away from me and it wont work. I we both followed the instructions on our operating systems and it says a connection can not be made. Can you provide more detailed info.

Please don't use VNC, the traffic is not encrypted and shutting down the firewall could leave you vulnerable. Of if both have NAT routers, they will have to set port forwarding rules. Team Viewer is an application that connects out to a broker server on the net, and it is secure. But in a real pinch, you could do what Saint recommended.
