we have a modem router combo but the router part is b - want upgrade that to n for better range. Will I have to start from scratch and buy a both a modem and router seperately or can I aadd a n router to the existing package.

If ADSL, you might as well replace the whole thing as most wireless routers sold these days come with ADSL and the cost difference must be negligible.
