I want to subscribe to Direct TV, but I live in Canada. How can I go about
becoming a subscriber?

You can't, "legally."
And being as the Canadians will and DO work with the US federal laws and
punishments regarding fines or possible jail time WHEN (or if, if you
choose) get caught, I could only possibly recommend stringing a
Reeeeeaaaly long cable from a dish/Receiver JUST inside the US Border.
And it had best be property that you own!
The only other "cheat" would be to have a friend in the US buy a system
and have it activated, then have him snail mail the system to you.
Billing will of course be sent to this "friend", and of course YOU will
have to install and aim it your self.
Still highly illegal, and I don't condone such measures or the use of
hacked cards.
(after all, if YOU think that DISH/DTV doesn't pay attention to this and
other newsgroups regarding this issue, yer sadly mistaken!)
TV just isn't worth going to jail for, considering what's on it!
And with those northern latitudes, you won't get the good stuff anyway.

Get serious, DISH and DTV not only don't monitor newsgroups, they
probably don't know that they exist.

DISH serves the northern latitudes and offers about 150 channels, but
DTV doesn't.

You know this for a fact?
I know I most certainly wouldn't take the chance.
I DO know for a fact that they know plenty about those that hack cards
and etc., as my dealer alerted me to some interesting cases he was
involved in.
You see, he hates getting ripped off from his commissions as well!

FOXNEWS IS BANNED IN CANADA
And they invent watching foreign TV as a crime.
Suppose Milosevic(etc.) was executing Muslims in his detention / death camps
and was televising the action to his other death camps and to his own office
by encoded satellite transmissions. And a Canadian person in Canada saw it
on his dish , taped it and informed the public.
Would the Canadian government arrest him for "illegal use of satellite
dish"?

I have direct tv and I live in Canada, I however have an america address. that I got when I went down there with my motor home for a few months.
If you can get an american address you can do everything on line, set up auto pay on your canadian credit card. Direct Tv doesnt care how they get thier money...just that they do.
I had an auto finder installed on my motor home when I was downt the US, works good. I have been as far north as Edmonton and had no problems with it, just lost a few channels. If you have to call them you cant do it from your canadian phone it wont work. I use skype and it goes through.
The sad part about all this is. I dont mind keeping my business and money in Canada if I can get what I want. My 3 favorite channels are only avalible in the US, lets face it "Canadian content" is usually another word for crap.
If this is a free country ..why cant we get all the TV channels that are avalible, who are they to say what we watch????
Ive had direct TV for over 10 years with an american address and never stepped foot there to get the address either! lol (well except over the border to the nearest radio shack to buy the dish system).. I have an american dealer who supplies me with an american address and I get ALL the channels perfectly clear and always have... I did live in thunder bay (very northern ontario) when I initially set up... and I have since moved to southern ontario and reconnected my dish... and I have never had a problem.. I even have a new american programming contact who gets me my direct tv programming annually...
It's not a problem... and my local satellite provider installed it without a fuss.. I'm not sure what the issue is... Oh, and for the record... ALL my neighbours are OPP and they don't care either... in fact, they asked me what programming costs were compared to their crappy canadian dishes.

Hi Tink,
I would like to set this up as well. Can you elaborate on your American dealer who supplies you with an American address?
Thanks!

Im a bit hesitant to do this online in a public forum, and I don't know you either... I don't want to cause this person any problems either...
I can tell you this - if you go to the states and buy a direct TV satellite dish you will NOT have any problem procurring the programming... BUT do not call direct tv yourself as they will not connect up the programming themselves... but it is easy to get the programming. So if you have a dish (and by the way, it is not illigal to obtain the dish) it is the programming that is the problem *groans* If I knew you better, longer and had some sort of online relationship with you, I'd give you her information in a heart beat... I just pay her by credit card, she procures my programming through direct tv and sets it up using her own address I would assume, or an american post box..*shrugs* i am not sure,,, but never had a problem... I used to deal directly with a dealer in thunder bay on the canadian side but he retired and set me up with her instead...

Hi Tink,
Thank you for your posts. You are so right I too had a dish many years ago and never had any problems although I am finding it so hard to find someone to get me hooked up again. The company I used have moved and I have not been able to locate them since. I know you are saying it's not a good idea to post and I couldn't agree more, online posting can be seen by all. I'm not sure where in Canada you are but I'm in BC any chance you could email me someone to contact for the American address? We are trying to get our dich programing back, the Canadian channels have nothing on the US for adults and kids. Any help would be greatly appreciated.[/email]

Wow BrockSolid, You NARKS are real inconspicuous. Next time don't try so hard... you might actually catch someone
I also live in Canada in a city bordering the US. I have a friend that had a friend provide his american address to purchase a direct tv system. I was wondering if it was possible to piggyback on his account. Can u live in two different homes and recieve programming??? Without direct tv noticing? I hav heard of people doing this but i would not want to get my friends service cut off or his friend that provided the american address.
thanx
