Very annoying 8800 GTS and 19" 3:4 monitor

I bought last year a 8800 GTS BFG OC2 with 320 memory and I have a LG 19" 3:4 monitor. The resolution is 1280/1024. I am running XP. I have 2 GB RAM, WD Raptor 10,000. Asus MB. AMD Athlon 64X2 6000, 3GHz, power Enermax Infiniti 720W. Obviously I can play games only up to 1280/1024 resolution. Despite this relative low resolution setting, games like London Hell Gate I have problems playing. It is very annoying because the system is one year old and 1280/1024 is not so high. Anyone else experiencing the same problems? Besides buying a new system is there any other way? Any real help it would be appreciated.

Try overclocking it. Rivetuner is a good utility.

Go to Nvidia Control Panel and tweak settings. Enable all optimizations, increase pre-rendered frame number to 8.

Or set Hellgate London to run in dx9 instead of dx10. The dx10 mode of the game is badly optimized. With a g92 8800gts, I get fps drops down to 30 in some places in dx10 mode, while maxes out all the time in dx9.

If youre running XP, you CANT run DX10, only DX9 and under, as DX10 is Vista exclusive

1280X1024 is NATIVE resolution for a 19" monitor, it's not low res, it's as high as your're going to get!! You need a newer/better video card to get better performance/frame rates for anything you may want to play. A 4850 with 512mb of memory will set you back $150(+-), it'll cure ALL your ills. That and a 22" monitor should staunch your tears...

I know that but what I was trying to say it was that for such monitor a 8800 should be enough. I hope that you are right regarding 4850 but honestly I was trying to get 4850 in crossfire configuration but I could not. I am in Toronto and I didn't see it anywhere. For my needs the monitor it's fine. On the other hand I do not want to spent money for something good for 6 months or so. I rather change the system. Perhaps I made a mistake sticking with AMD. Thank you for advice.

An 8800 should be more than enough for a 19" monitor, I'm playing Crysis and Bioshock with one and a Samsung 22" widescreen to boot; both at relatively high settings. I personally don't think you're running an underpowered system, but I've recently upgraded to a Gigabyte P45 motherboard with an Intel E8500 CPU. I'm overclocking it to 3.8gHz, and my frame rates haven't changed from the P35/E6400 setup I had. I think you have a video card issue...

I agree. Its not his cpu, but his gpu. All this badmouthing of AMD takes it toll. This is for games. The single best thing a gamer can do to make his gaming experience better is by getting the best gpu he can get, or she can get, period.

I have two options in terms of video card: 4850 with 512 which is 215$ or 4870 with 512 which is 340$. Any recommendations? If I can get away with 4850 I would not spend the money on 4870.

What a scam. 4850 can't use 1gb vram anyway. 512mb version of 4870 cost as low as $215 after mir, and performs significantly better.

Does it happen with all games, or just HGL? Are the frame rates constantly low, or jumpy?

I started using it recently. Only brought it because of the price drops. Didn't consider it back when it's new and cost $500. Upgraded from a g92 8800gts. Performance match the benchmarks floating around out there.

If you're keeping the 19", all you need is 512mb of memory. The 4850 is 1x to 2x times better than the 8800gt, and it's half the price I paid last December 2007, ($315) for one. Spend what to will, but if you're getting a newer/bigger monitor any sooner, then spend as you can, as always, YOU have to pull the trigger...

What did you mean "2x better?" The performance gap between 8800gt and 4850 is 10% - 30%, depending on game. See benchmarks.

One to Two X isn't a HUGE jump, and benchmarks being what they are, twisted to fit the publications advertising budget and PAID point of view of those advertising. 1X to 2X is REAL world, not just games, video playback, excel spreadsheets, and online PORN. Get REAL!

Those are not synthetic scores, but average frame per second from real games. You get the same fps when actually playing those games. :sarcastic:

And what does video playback, spreadsheets, and porn have to do with high end graphics cards? You can view porn just fine with onboards. With high end gpus, gaming is the beginning and the end. And how is "2x" not a huge jump? :whistle:
