I got a Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512M GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I/TVO from NewEgg and installed it into my machine. It works but I cannot install the drivers that came with it which are for Vista x64. I'm running Server 2008 x64. The driver installation crashes when I attempt to install it.

So I contact tech support at Sapphire and after an exchange of a few emails their conclusion was that the card was faulty and I should return it to NewEgg which I'm about to do. My personal opinion, however, is that the card is probably okay and that the drivers have not been tested or used much on Server 2008 x64.

So I'm looking for a graphics card to stick in a machine that's running Server 2008 x64. I need it to be able to support 2 different sized monitors and hopefully boost the performance of the machine.

Are the any cards that you've tried on Server 2008 x64 that the drivers will install for that you can recommend?

Any of the dual-headed Radeon 2400-2600 cards should work fine. "Boost the performance of the machine". With servers, that's THROUGHPUT, not video gaming output. Size the OS with what you want the machine to do, a sever is what it is, not a gaming machine!

Server 2008 has issues with GPU's. It took me forever to get my 7300LE to run perfectly on it. Then again, any Windows Server wasn't designed to run high end GPU's because normal servers don't have them. I mean, who needs a 512MB GPU for a server that 99.99% of the time don't even have a monitor hooked up to them. With this in mind, if you're going to game, just run Vista.

I'm not gaming with this machine but using it as a desktop development machine. However I still want graphics performance and multi-monitors for applications such as Google Earth.

What you want is a workstation video card.

What recommendations do you have for a workstation video card that will work on Server 2008 x64? i.e. that the drivers will work for...

I don't know about the specific HD4850 card that you have, but ATI drivers for Vista x64 should work. I use an older 1950Pro on my Windows Server 2008 x64and it works fine (as do all other Vista X64 drivers that I used for other components). On the other hand, I didn't try to install CCC as it definitely isn't required on a server. I tested it with 3DMark06 and it works fine. Sapphire support might be correct when they say that the card is defective.

Thanks for the info - perhaps I judged their support too quickly. What sort of QA do video cards typically go through before they're packed for shipping? I've heard that you should expect a 5% defect rate for all new electronic parts/gadgets so this could be expected...

What is CCC?

CCC is the acronym for Catalyst Control Center.
