I suppose it's no big deal to leave the Palm in the cradle charging
oh, 5 hours a day, whilst I use the desktop computer, as lithium
polymer batteries' circuitry won't allow the battery to overcharge,
right?

By the way, how long does a drained m505 take to charge?
How many charge - discharge cycles before I have to buy a new PDA?
How much of the basic built-in software can one substitute with Free
Software e.g., from http://www.palmopensource.com/?

Correct.

I don't know, but 4 hours should be more than enough.

I'm not aware of anyone who has had this happen. It's in the thousands.

The built-in software can't be deleted, because it's in ROM, but you can
use other software in RAM instead if you want. Datebk5 is one of the
most popular datebook replacements, but it isn't free. It is cheap,
though. Anything you can find can be used, but the built-in apps will
still be there in ROM.

You can leave it in the cradle indefinately as far as the battery is
concerned. The battery is replacable. I just replaced the ageing and
failing battery in my TE which required solder wires, but I am almost
certain that the m505 uses a plug in connector. I know that the m500
does.

It should normally charge in about 3 hours.

I have an ipaq x3115. The manual says to leave the unit plugged in to AC power
when not using it, to extend battery life. When i do the battery gets hot and
the touch screen no longer works. Unit is one week old, just returned the last
one to the store for the same problem.

JackFlash (http://www.brayder.com) can replace some of the builtin apps,
but only if you have flash rom. I have a Tungsten E, and its rom is
non-flashable, so not only can I not use JackFlash, I can't upgrade my
OS (which is fine at 5.2.1)

Right.

I had a m500 and a m515, now I have e T3 and all charge full from empty
(via the collapsible USB cradle I got with the m515) in about half an hour.
However, when travelling, through a retractable cable it takes about 3
hours.

Why buy a new PDA? Most resellers offer refurbishement services, battery
replacement included, for a fraction of the nwe PDA price.

Basically all, as long as you can make it fit into RAM :-) If you have a
service centre and a PalmFlash (or how that program is called), you can
create your own ROM image and replace the flash contents with it. With
it you can erase for example the web browser, the original PIMs, and
flash your own selection of applications and write-only data into your
Palm. But the app is rather expensive and only pays off to a large company.
