Aw poor little Microsoft... they were bullied into a corner by the giant Intel. It's not like MS doesn't have any money to stand on its own...

Mister half-inch and AMD, what a power pair. He's not really an AMD fanboy, just an employee trying to swim against the FLUSH of the current... I hear Radio Shack is hiring for the holidays!
I won't comment on what happened on the corporate side of the whole vista launch thing, but I will say this. I worked retail selling computers during the launch and the information about vista capable vs. vista ready was there for the employees to pass on to the customer. However it was not made mandatory or readily available. (employees are given access to additional training by various partners, in this case microsoft.) So really I feel the blame should fall on retail outlets, which MS has no control over. Just my 2 cents on old news.
Yet another quality Thunderman thread. Let's bump this.

Yes, I feel your pain. Vista ready = can run Vista. Vista capable = well... Vista capable. A lot like the gaming specs.
I don't like Vista, because of the DRM, so I don't care, but it's fun to watch.
Intel?... no Vista! uh... er... MS.
meh, it was collusion pure and simple.

I will excuse Canadian Marxism very easily, just don't think it's correct.
I love Marxism as much as the next guy, unfortunately it doesn't work.
Maybe Dagger should PM me instead.

Unofficial? Clearly you are the right choice to become the official fan leader.
Why not contact AMD to see what they say?
They should pay him.
Except he does a poor job of convincing.
I hope AMD comes back, we need them. He!! Intel needs them.
When Intel Bullied Microsoft into labelling Hardware... not capable of handling that Best vista experience as 'Vista capable'.....They mislead their customers. It's my opinion that Microsoft is the Victim here...It's unfair as poor Microsoft will take the wrap while Intel can go and start more evil plans.
Intel may find themselves at the mercy of AMD soon.... when 45nm Phenoms hit!
AMD4Life!!
Yes, Intel is evile, so evile theyre right now honing in on your location....BEWARE!!!!

Very interesting information. I read through a large part of the legal brief. It really says more about Microsoft than it does Intel. All companies were looking out for their best interests, including Microsoft at first. However, Microsoft which took a firm stance at first to have WDDM compatibility as a requirement for "Vista Ready" gave into the pressures of Intel and many other parties to drop one of the core benefits of Vista as a requirement.
Really, in the end, it's shame on Microsoft for losing their balls part-way through.
In other news, AMD stock still struggles to stay above $2.50.

Such is the danger of both sides having > %80 marketshare. And let's not forget about the consumer here, after all they are the ones ultimately paying the price.
Other big losers in the process include AMD, NV, HP, etc. who poured in R&D capital, adhered to the requirements and had hardware ready and suited for launch. These players stood to gain significant revenue from the abyss that would have been left by Intel's lack of hardware support. The only big winner really, WAS Intel who were allowed to bring their subpar hardware to the table, and not sitting in a warehouse collecting dust.
Microsoft gained nothing but a serious backlash and a damaged reputation. Obviously though, they only have themselves to blame, and should have left their foot down.
So I think in order to find out where to point the finger, you just have to evaluate who had and did have the most to gain.

A person must really have to have a passionate hate for Intel to be a Microsoft sympathizer.
My thoughts are, M$ would and did do anything to sell Vista. Anyone remember the DX10 debacle? And this too? Yea, in ways both nVidia and Intel are somewhat guilty, but M$ let it happen, and AMD and ATI and others more than likely lost sales. Im thinking that things like this isnt going to make for better bedfellows between Intel and M$ in the future tho, and with things like Larrabee coming out soon, as well as other things, M$ just may have more than what was it? 640Kbs of memory?

Things like this?!?!?! This is OLD NEWS! This is worse than seeing someone who had a death in the family... You guys probably have so psychotic MS shrines you touch yourselves to... How about we discuss new things instead of digging up old graves?
How did the court case come out? Let us know please?

Another M$ doing the pooch here http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inqu [...] rade-vista
I know its the INQ, but, its a good read
Heres a quote from them : "I see from the announcement on the OEM website that the rumor I referred to in my earlier message is indeed true. You should understand that for a partner who has made a significant investment in meeting the Vista Capable requirement we find it both disappointing and troubling that you would make such a decision without first consulting HP, your biggest global partner.
"The decision you have made and communicated has taken away an investment we made consciously for competitive advantage knowing that some players would choose not to make the same level of investment as we did in supporting our program requirements.
"Now we have a situation where PC manufacturers (and processor/chipset suppliers) can claim Vista Capable in a 'good' mode just because it will run. What kind of consumer assurance is that? Hardly one that puts any credence behind your desire to create the 'best possible customer experience for the Windows Vista Upgrade'.
"I can't be more clear than to say you not only let us down by reneging on your commitment to stand behind the WDDM requirement, you have demonstrated a complete lack of commitment to HP as a strategic partner and cost us a lot of money in the process. Your credibility is severely damaged in my organization...."
This is getting very interesting

I completely agree and sympathize with HP. I could not imagine how much it hurt them to invest money so their machines would be "Vista Ready" only to have the bar completely lowered.
I like the Inqs comments aas to maybe thats why HP continued to sell XP for so long heheh
