Hi I want to upgrade from an Intel P4 socket 775 processor to a dual core processor... what are the factors I need to consider on upgrading...? Like power etc.? or is any socket 775 processor compatible?
I saw all these Nm ratings etc. like 35nm 45nm what is this aswell????

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU @ 3.06Ghz (i know...) Prescott, LGA775
PSU is 250w
2.5GB DDR2 RAM
Motherboard - Sunshine DDR2 (GA-8I915PMD) Ver 0.1 (by Gigabyte)
Motherboard webpage: http://support.packardbell.com/uk/ [...] PB34225401

(I think thats all u need to know if u need to know anything else please ask :)) Thanks in advanced everyone, all help is appreciated)

*** If you know any good sites or any good cheap dual core CPU's please say so :) ***

Cheers ;)

I don't think your board supports duocore - might need a bios upgrade.

First you should have to find out the exact list of CPU's supported by your MB. You shouldn't be very optimistic about the upgrade posibility, because you only have an Intel 915P chipset (is about the same thing i'm having: Gigabyte GA 8i915P Duo). I suggest to find out for yourself on the Gigabyte site, what kind of CPU's are supported by MB's with similar chipset. I'm only guessing that are no dual core CPU's supported, but.....you'll see more exactly.
Don't matter if they are made on 90nm, 65 or 45. it's the chipset limitting your options.

Normally, support for upgrade CPU's on prebuilds (especially an HP) is extremely limited.

Your motherboard chipset (915P )will only support Celeron/P4 Processors.
Looks like you are already have the about best CPU you can run on that board.

i checked the website for any BIOS updates to see if there were any with release notes that stated Core @ Duo support, but i could find only 2 BIOS updates, and neither stated support for Core 2 Duo. the best bet is to call their tech support and ask, of search the internet to see if anyone with the same board has a Core 2 in that board. Good Luck.

You board is a P4-Celeron board. you have to change board, cpu, and PSU can be a good thing to.

go for P5Q
E8400
450W+psu
some 800mhz ram
a 40-50$ aircooling. nice for a lil OC to 3.0+ oc

looks like about the whole computer ;)

May I know why you want to upgrade?
Are you into demanding games (ie crysis) or video editing?

Fry's electronics has some amazing combo closeout specials good through Thursday. I chose the e4500 retail boxed with ecs g33 board for $49.99. The combo deals may only be available with this board. The ad is online under "dallas fry's ad". I didn't ask about other cpus, but this one is excellent. And you don't have to wait in line like black friday. Call the stores for similar combo deals.

+1. New build could be had for ~$400-500.

You might be able to use a hacked BIOS to extend the CPU support of your board, but of course you take your chances with those. Even then I don't think the 915P chipset is electrically compatible with better CPUs. I say get a new motherboard and CPU, and re use your other components for now if you're on a budget.

Wellthanks so far :)

I don't have a budget, i'm 14 and I don't have a job so no go there :D

I am asking my mum and dad to pay for the CPU. It may seem like a waste of money but I thought I should future proof the CPU, seeing that I saw a PC the other day at 700GBP with a 2.4Ghz Quad core CPU. I paid 600GBP 3years ago for this PC....

So any other ideas of speeding it up? I already have 2.5GB of RAM and I do video editing and surfing the net, watching videos, playing about with photo editing and sometimes a spot of gaming... and a spot as I don't really download Crysis and all that, I play those sortof games on my Xbox
:D Thank you very much for all your help, I really do appreciate it and it's nice of you to dedicate a little spare time to help people out, i really respect you all on Tom's Hardware, I am now starting to feel like a member... :D
Thanks again everyone!

The OP is in the UK. Prices and availability will be very different there. He probably can't afford the airfare to visit Fry's :-/.
Some of my earliest experiences were with Slackard-Hell computers. Undersized PSUs and proprietary components were among their many vices.
I'm not sure what to suggest here as far as extending the life of this machine. It seems to me that the limited benefits will not be worth the cost.
If you have a budget for a new system, post it and I'm sure you'll get some suggestions.

Does that system have a discrete video card in it? If so, what is it?

I missed something before and thought this was a Hewlitt/Packard. I see now that it is a Packard/Bell.
There is not much you can do with this thing in the way of upgrades. A video card might help, but since you say that you don't really game on it, forget about spending any money on this machine. Even if you could upgrade the CPU (which you cannot) it is not worth spending any money on.

The following build is a bottom-dollar AMD build. It is not of direct value because of price and availability issues, however shows what can be done for very little money. This machine, though low end, would be amazing compared to the OP's current Slackard-Hell. I believe the final price converts to about 249 GBP.

hi there thanks, it has a seperate video card although reguires extra ram, it is a nVidia GeForce 6200 LE @ 64mb but can go up to 256MB with RAM...

The integrated GPU on the 790GX board will smoke the 6200LE, and that's not saying much. When even more money becomes available, you can put whatever GPU on there you like (up to the limit of the PSU). Since you say you game mostly on a console, it should be sufficient.

If you really need to pinch pennies, you could go for a 780G AMD board instead. The savings wont be huge($10-$30) but considering you have to talk the parents into it, every little bit could help.

OK then.. what about overclocking, I have a coolermaster on the thing and I bought it for pure looks lol, I don't think you can overclock this type of chip/board but is there any way ????????????

Thanks so far everyone ! :D

No, I'd be very surprised if you can overclock your current board. There might be a utility that can help you do it; not sure. I believe there was a recent Tom's article that listed some.
