I have a Zire 72s. I wanted to know how I could delete or hide certain
items from the Home screen, like, Quick Tour, Bluetooth, Calc, Dialer,
Expense. Now if I can delete, will I be able to intall them when I will
need at a later time.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Some are in ROM and cannot be deleted. You can create a new category
and move some of those programs to it, so you will not see them in the
main category.

You can't delete apps that are in ROM. You can place them in different
categories.

You can get JackFlash, and delete them from your ROM, and use the free ROM
space to add programs you like and will keep.

Warning:

If you tamper with the ROM, you can void your warranty, and worst, ruin your
PDA, not that it ever happened to me. I have been able to successfully
delete and restore ROM applications.

Forgive the top-post...
Deleting ROM ? Perhaps you do not understand what "ROM" means...
Read Only Memory, you can't "delete" anything written to ROM.

You can delete flash memory, which is sometimes referred to as "Flash
ROM". A misnomer, maybe.

Perhaps you're the one who doesn't understand what "ROM" means. Using
JackFlash, you can certainly delete apps from flash ROM on a Palm, and
add others, at will. It's only read-only under normal conditions. I
have removed almost all the built-in apps, and all the extra language
support, from my T3 and replaced them with useful programs. The only
thing I kept was Docs To Go, and I replaced the installed version with an
update.

In response to Squirrel's post, Stan Gosnell wrote:
<Summary: You can delete ROM>

I think the basic problem is that the consumer electronics marketing
weenies have taken a term which has a precise engineering meaning,
namely "ROM", and distorted it beyond all recognition.

Originally, "ROM" meant "Read Only Memory", as Squirrel writes. If you
can write to it, it's not "ROM", by definition. If you can delete from
it, again, it's not "ROM", by definition. ("So how do you get the data
into ROM in the first place?", you ask. It's hard-coded, if you will,
into the chip during the manufacturing process. A place I used to work
made ROM memory for handheld calculators.)

Now, thanks to the above-mentioned consumer electronics marketing
weenies, the definition of "ROM" has seemingly morphed into something
like "Memory which doesn't go away when you turn the power off".

I wonder if they (whoever "they" are) would consider a hard drive to be
"ROM"? My hunch is, "Yes".

No, I don't think you grasp what "ROM" means. "ROM" stands for "Read
Only Memory" (except when it stands for "Royal Ontario Museum" ), and
is a technology that does not permit memory writes.

You can't modify ROM chips, except in the unuseful senses that result
from doing something to physically damage them.

"Burning a ROM" essentially involves burning a set of fuses, and if
you recall how fuses work, they are not amenable to reuse.

Perhaps you're the one who doesn't understand Stan. The original poster was
asking about his Zire72 which *does not* have flash rom. So Squirrel was right

Yes. It's "trouble" dealing with customers and others who generalize
what they actually mean when working with "exact" technologies. The
misuse of ROM for EEPROM seems to be occurring much like the failure
to say "ask" as opposed to "axe" and the more common failure to use
the simple period.

But that only works with Palm models that have flash ROM.

Okay Okay OKAY!

I get the point, I meant FLASH ROM, Geez, give it a rest.

I did not realize that the Zire did not have "Flash ROM", so please
disregard my post.

"Aks" as a variant of "ask" is nearly as old as the English language;
you'll find it, for example, in Chaucer. The modern predominance of
"ask" is quite recent.

"Sheer", on the other hand, has never had an "a" before the "r".

Certainly it has. Just not with that meaning. A Microsoft 'spell

I am quite sure that to "axe" someone would get you in trouble with
the law (heh, bad grammar)... however to "ask" someone would be ok.

My only intention with my example was to draw attention to how lazy
speech leads to incorrect thinking. Arguments about pronunciation can
continue as long as anyone cares to participate but no amount of
arguing can make a ROM erasable.
Perhaps I chose a poor comparison when I selected the "axe / ask - ROM
/ EEPROM(Flash RAM)" example.

I feel that instead of entering into a fencing contest we should agree
to be as careful with our terminology as the technology warrants. If
you are a programmer, then you already understand how a single
misplaced character in an application can cause problems. If you have
never engaged in anything requiring attention to detail at the
'character-level', then... well, to continue would be an invitation to
further fencing. :)

Please pull forward and collect your meal at the next window, thank
you and come again.

Isn't it a bit ironic that when Notan uses "shear stupidity" to criticize others
speech, he misspells sheer.

Lazy speech? A dialect may differ from 'standard' English but not because anyone
is necessarily lazy. They simply talk as other people do in their region.
Incorrect thinking? Well perhaps that would explain those New Englanders... ;)

I'm amazed at how my mistake has actually snowballed into a discussion.

I wrote "shear." I meant to write "sheer." It wasn't due to ignorance
or stupidity, just plain carelessness. As an engineer, I've used "shear"
so often, it just slipped out.

I was not implying that you were stupid, and never believed that for a second.
It's was just the irony of the thing. Calling a particular pronunciation of a
word stupid and then misspelling a word in the same sentence. In the heat of our
little off topic mini-debate I just couldn't pass it up... ;)
