I've been following the forums for a few weeks now and most people are recommending the following:

Xigamek S1283
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] &Tpk=s1283

Retention Bracket for Xigamek S1283
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835233019

Do you live in Canada? If you're in the US, I would definitely reccommend checking Newegg.com instead of TigerDirect.com.

What kind of things are you looking to do on your computer? (gaming/video editing/etc.)

What kind of budget are you working with?

I can't really endorse most of your choices today, sorry :)

You can do a lot better for the same price.

The only thing I can get behind here is the video card, and the idea of crossfire ready.

E8400 Intel CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115037
ASUS P5Q Pro MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131299
4 gigs OCZ Reaper memory (800Mhz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820227267
Antec 300 OR 900 case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129021
Corsair PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139005

Now, you could argue that you get better CF performance at a reasonable price with your motherboard. However, you then gimp yourself with a slow CPU. For about the same price you get a great new chipset with the P45 plus a really nice processor that will boost performance well over any minor performance you got from the 790FX board in CF.

Yep, throw in the cooler and bracket, some arctic 5 thermal paste, your video card, and:

A good HD and you are set.

I like that 790FX, it does Crossfire at full speed x16+x16, while the P5Q Pro doesn't.

I'd get a quad CPU (Phenom 9850 Black Edition), with that kind of budget, but that's just me. If it's mostly for games then dual is fine.

Good MB and video card and RAM.

Dump the ATA-100 (IDE) hard disk, get a WD6400AAKS instead.

Also, get yourself a better case. For example Antec 900 is $80 with free shipping at newegg now. Or RC-690, if you don't want lights.

Get a Corsair 750TX PSU from newegg.

Cooler: based on newegg reviews for that MB, I can tell you the Zalman 9700 fits. I don't normally recommend that cooler because I find it rather expensive. However, with these Asus Deluxe boards, it's very important to get a cooler that fits. For example the Freezer 7 won't fit on a P5Q Deluxe because the board has some cooling pipes that get in the way.

First, Fix your links!

I'd go with an Intel build. But if you're going with a high end AMD system get a Phenom cpu and ddr2-1066 ram. If you really want to get an X2, get a Brisbane, not Windsor and get ddr2-800 CL4 ram. Get a better quality brand PSU like Corsair, Antec, PC power and cooling etc.

proximon, I have been real torn about amd and intel. The E-8400 was my first choice but the motherboards have had me flip flopping between amd and intell and price is a factor also. I have to stay under 1200. I am dead set on crossfire. The mother boards have been sort of tricky for me trying to take full advantage the technology that comes on all the hardwhare. I think what you posted will give me the most bang for my buck.

I think you'll like it, I'm running most of that myself.

proximon, what cpu cooling fan and heatsink do you have. Ill be getting the antec 300 case and ill be useing the ASUS P5Q PRO LGA motherboard?

Will the heat pipes on the OCZ REAPER HCP EDITION be in the way????

zvandy, thank for the heads up with newegg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No.

Here's a link to my thread with pics:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] 1283-e8400

That's on a P5Q-E, so the cooling fins aren't the problem.

What you have to worry about is the height. I think it will fit in your case.
