Proud owner of XFX GTX 260 xxx edition.
Specs very close to GTX 280.
I have this card about 1 month and i am very very happy.
I suggest you to buy this card. Its about 15-20% better from the 4870 wich is also a good card.

P.S. sorry for my poor english

I'm glad you like your card, but the gtx260 isn't 15% better than the 4870 - overall they are on par with each other.

Yep, the 4870 is slightly faster than gtx260, although 1.5% is basically nothing.

Performance is rather poor though, about the same as 3870. For $20 more you can get a 8800gt that performs much better. The performance difference is a lot more than 20%.

True, but some people who buy $2000 worth of computer parts and $300 for a GPU don't want to overclock.
; )

not many really.

My computer in it's entirety (mouse, keyboard, speakers included, monitors were free) cost about $2300. $190 was spent on my HD 3870 (I'm only a casual gamer). The rig is posted in my configuration.

I did overclock my q6600. Mostly my computer is used for development applications (Pro E, Matlab, Maple, Eclipse, EES, AutoCAD, etc.). I also rip lots of DVDs, CDs, watch TV on my computer while stuff like Outlook is open. Games I play are pretty much just RPGs I find interesting; recently would be Neverwinter Nights expansions.

There are a couple things I would do differently, such as not getting DDR3 RAM.
Poor choice on my part.

Anyways, I did spend over $2000 on computer, less than $300 on GPU, AND overclocked. :sol:

I was in the same boat last week. I had always used Nvidia in the past. I was looking to upgrade and decided to take the leap to ATI. I purchased a 4870 last week and have NOT been dissapointed. No issues with drivers or installation. COD4, Mass Effect, Bioshock all look awesome. I can play Crysis at 1680x1050 with all settings on very high (except shadow detail on high) and average 25 fps. I was impressed! I know that isn't perfect, but 25 fps is very playable and it looks great! The lowest the rate dropped was to 18 and that only happened once!

There are several great cards available right now. Whether you choose a 260 or a 4870, I'm sure it will serve you well! Good luck!

Hey man i was looking at your post and see that you had a viewsonic monitor and a 4870 graphics card, i am having problems getting drivers on my 4870, once i install the drivers i get a black screen after reboot, i have already rma the graphics card, the motherboard company says it might be my monitor is incompatable with my card. i have the same vx2035wm. i know the graphics card works, i know the memory works, the cpu works, the onboard graphics are off, what else could it be?

Couple things you could try. I think my monitor had drivers (not sure what they did). You could also try hooking it up through the Analog port (or DVI if you are using analog). Also, does the screen go black as soon as windows starts (does POST work)? You can always go in using safemode to uninstall drivers/investigate.

Also, you may just want to start up a new thread, since this one is several months old.
