^Nehalem is supposes to be ~20% faster. Go with option 1. You may have to wait till February to get a decent price on Nehalem.

How's ASUS P5Q Pro board? I just saw a good deal...
Yeah...probably option 1. I'll put up a poll..
Yeah.....so the E2180 and which board?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128337
how's this one? (Ds3L)
The E2180 is the best in cheap performance under $100?
Which Ram?
The DS3L is fine for the E2180. Thats what i originally had till i sold it...lol
I used to like Crucial ram but they are dead now....just find a good set. Corsair, Patriot, G. Skill whatever is cheaper.
Get DDR2-800 Cas 4
Reply to Silverion77
OK - I guess the DS3L will be my board - again, I'm going to use this with a cheap CPU (E2180 or anything that's around that) and DDR2 RAM,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820227139
how's this?
I'm going to use the 3 for ~2 months, until the Nehalem Mid-range chip comes out, and I'm going to snag it along with the 4850X2....then sell the 3 to a friend who's waiting to build a $5-600 PC in ~2 months....
(in the mean time I'll use my old 7900gt)
I'll sell the combo to him for...maybe $10 off mobo and cpu, so I'll lose ~$20, but have money to buy the new stuff....X58/Bloomfield....good plan?
P.S.....

Looks good. Make sure you get the bolt in kit for the XIGMATEK.

Reply to shadow703793
will do! Will they come up with a Nehalem i7 socket bolt-in kit?
Comments!
(will get a 24" later on and a 4850X2)
getting ready to buy - comments please!
Intel 2.0 GHz E2180 ($70)
Gigabyte DS3L ($85)
WD 640GB SATAII ($85)
Sony NEC Optiarc DVD-ROM ($18)
Samsung DVD-Burner 22x ($25)
Xigmatech CPU cooler ($26 After rebate)
Bracket ($6)
2 GB OCZ DDR2 ($19 after rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820227139
(will upgrade to nehalem later, and 24" and HD4850X2)
That looks about like the setup I'm trying to fly past my wife. Basically a sub-$300 PC, or $400 with a good vid card - that's with a case/PSU combo to get under $300. Possibly a good Media Center PC when I can upgrade again.
*nods* Very good inexpensive setup. Tom's had a $500 game rig earlier this year, and the prices have really plummeted since then - and getting ready to do so again.
I also agree with waiting at least 6 months after the new stuff comes out before getting it (what am I talking about? I've had the same system for about 8 years!). Prices will drop. Also, it looks like there will be a "mainstream" Nehalem released with the others, just maybe not at the time - but maybe a month or two later. Go back and look at the chart that was put up earlier in this thread.
When you do get to it, build a great system, and it should last you a few years (up to 5). And for game play, all you should have to do is upgrade the graphics and nothing else. My A7V333 and XP 2000+ can attest to that.
haha. thanks. I'll be pairing this stuff up with an Antec P182, Corsair 620HX, X-Fi Extrememusic Fatal1ty Pro, Logitech Z-5300e 5.1 speakers, (temp 20" Samsung, waiting for a 24" black friday), (temp 7900GT, waiting for 4850 X2 in Sept), and (selling CPU/Mobo/RAM to friend when Mid-range Nehalem comes out, along with X58 and DDR3)
The OCZ RAM is significantly cheaper than the other 2GB.....is that strange?

The Midrange seems to be coming out at the same time as the higher end Bloomfields...

A 2.93 GHz Core i7 900 system has been used to run a 3DMark Vantage benchmark and gave a CPU score of 17,966.[10] The 2.66 GHz Core i7 800 scores 16,294. A 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo E6600 scores 4,300.[11]
sounds good...
I guess the title should have been..substitute build..for $2000 build..
OK - last time guys! Thanks for everything.
-I'm going to put off buying a CPU Cooler for right now - just use the stock and OC the E2180 to ~2.2-2.4 GHz....
SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner SH-S223Q/BEBN $29.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB $84.99
Sony NEC Optiarc DVD-ROM Drive DDU1615/B2s $17.99
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 OCZ2P800R22GK $30.00 Mail-in Rebate $49.49
GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L Intel P35 Motherboard $84.99
Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz Dual-Core Processor BX80557E2180 $69.99
Total: $337.44
Tax: $27.84 (CA)
Shipping: $12.80
Grand Total: $378.08 (-$30 for Ram rebate, so $348.08)
I need one last final check on the compatibility of parts, and quality of that OCZ RAM and DVD-Burner....
I will be running a 20" and a 7900GT for right now.
Again, I will sell the E2180/DS3L/RAM to my friend in ~2-3 months, and get myself a HD4850X2, 24" LCD, and Midrange Nehalem CPU with CPU cooler....
I'm kind of sick today, so I'm holding off until tomorrow. Last check!
And what connectors should I get (the HD and DVD-Burner are OEM)...
Thanks
what connectors should I get if any (the HD and DVD-Burner are OEM)...

If I say no, will you give me a copy?
One thing I heard was that the EP35 - DS3L was not an ocing board...? If I can get the proven wrong, I'll go ahead and try to OC my E2180 (using stock cooler, so might get 2.4 - 2.6 GHz)
All boards can OC again like I said i got my 2180 to 3.0 on my DS3L
The E only has energy saving....thats all. Otherwise its the same thing
Edit: nvm i didnt post....stupid laptop....

How should I partition? How does 50gb for OS and 560gb for everything else sound? or no partition?
help guys! I built the rig, works fine (2 fans aren't spinning...lol) installed Windows....for some reason, I can't play dvds in WMP 11....
says
“Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.”
???
I have XP codec pack installed, tried K-lite, same thing....

that's what I'm doing....but I'd really like putting all my music/movies on one player.....
Anyone suggest any settings.....EP35-DS3L/E2180 w/stock cooler/ 2GB OCZ Plat Rev.2 800......which mobo bios should I use? What core/settings?
also, why is my x-fi fatal1ty not working with front headphone jack???

Use F6a or F5. Others have a few voltage not sticking issues.

Reply to shadow703793
Okay - I didn't install the Dynamic Energy Saver.....my RAM is 800 at 5 latency (the OCZ Platinum Rev2)...think I can push it to cas 4?
I think it's at v1.0.....what's a good place to download the F5 driver? I want to try ~2.8GHz on my E2180 - what's a good voltage...should I do that without changing the multipliers? Just FSB increase?
too many questions.
U cant just get info from others cause all hardware is different
So we dont kno what voltage to run at 2.8 for u would be. I ran mine at stock with 9x multiplier with FSB at 310.
Same thing for cas. The OCZ is said to run at 5 so 4 is not guranteed. when u say v1.0 u mean for the ram?!?! i hope not as for the F5 Bios, the gigabyte site is a good place to start....
Reply to Silverion77
Thanks - I get what you mean. I was just asking for approximations. the OCZ is 4-4-4-15, but i guess you mean that people have had success only at 5...right?
v1.0 was bios.
O nvm i thought the ram was rated 5-5-5-etc. if its 4 then it will run at 4. But if ocing leave it at 5-5-5-15 and then once the cpu is stable, start tightening the the timings
