Now that my pc is prehistoric, I grabbed some kvr 2x1gb for my vid editing realistically priced. My q is more generalization than specific ...

I am 2x512 already. the new 1gbx2 is sill low density, exact timings match, etc, and purchased as dual channel setup. will the 512s cause any oddity?

I will be burying the ram...I think I could bury 8 gb... Ever put just 25 minutes of 10mbit video mpeg2 into the vid editor? I went into cache by twice my ram (3gb) and waited patiently...

I'd rather 4x 1gb and pretend a gig doesn't exist..but, My upgrades for this p4 are running out like its time.I went to the dual hard drives twinned a while back (old school trick) and it has really kept my sanity sane. I need the ram precise is all I hope to get answered generally asking.

put the 2x1 first, windoze is not a very smart os,so it needs all the help anybody can give,, give it the biggest ram first and the smallest last,
as to your swapfile you should manage it yourself lock it in to fixed size the smallest and the largest,ie:700-1000..whatever.
windoze is only supposed to use the swapfile when there are too many things in ram,and if you allow a very large swapfile it will ,sooner or later,,get fragmented all over the place, and generally snafu operations, what i do is put the little s**t in it's own partition, thus i never have to worry about it,,never..:)

hey thanks for replies.

I did assume the 2gb first (dual channel slot1 and 3). The 512 rams (2x512) I put custom coolers on after its first error a couple of months ago, encoding a 5 minute movie. The 512s are cured, but did grab the 2gb ram deal for my systems last upgrades.

The swap file, I did something I learned with a p2 and windows 2000, back in 2001:

on a second twinned drive, dedicate the first partition to the size I made it, just for the swapfile. The half a day of blippy quirks always goes away and the machine gets noticably bigger, as if to really widen the route after memory buried...stays a "bulldozer", easy does it but stable.

After making 1gb work, I may put the custom cooled 512s in a bin. (I like the 90nm p4 pc).

I have had the pc long enough to memorize the combos, but the book did leave a void for filling four channels...it seems they all had to be the same, but not sure.

I also learned ram can eat power. I somehow have a full house on a 12x9.6 board (msi-6728) on a 300watt smart power still original in its antect 2600 builders box from 2003.

Thanks again. I gained 1gb to park another...(15000+ hours on it anyway)
