Ive built a very budget pc. Here is my setup.

ASUS Striker Extreme (latest bios update)
Intel E2140 1.6ghz @ 2.4ghz
4X 512mb PC3200 400mhz DDR2 (I know I need to upgrade)
EVGA 8800GTS 640mb superclocked
Antec 350w PSU (I know I need to upgrade, but I think PC would still post)
Vista 32bit

My PC runs great with that setup. I bought a Q6600 at a very good price and through it in. Now the PC doesnt get video and the rear LCD on the striker just says DET DRAM which is a memory error from what Ive read. All components get power when I turn it on. I pulled all the sticks and ran just one 512mb to see what would happen and same issue. I swap the crappy e2140 back in and it boots everytime.

What could be the issue?

Well I would look at the power supply first of all. I dont know what that old CPU needed, but the 6600 needs the 8 pin power, so that is going to draw a little more. Maybe your vid card isnt gettin the power it needs now? Someone will probably come along and direct you towards the site that you can use to determine your wattage needed. A lot of the power supply companies have them i think. Maybe corsair or thermaltake it may have been.

Hmm that makes sense. I have only the 4pin plugged in right now since my crappy power supply dont have it. I think you are right about the video card, ive tested lots of video cards and if they are way under powered the pc will beep. If its just a little under powered you get power up but no video. Guess its time to upgrade the power supply.

Only thing that makes me think its something else is the det dram error on the rear. It should go past this on the lcd but it just hangs. I dont think the video card would cause this error.

motherboard is not getting enough power and that is causeing this. not only the video crad but the cpu and memory with that power supply..

I will be picking up a Cooler Master 750w True Power Pro PSU this week end. New for about $65, cant beat that. I will post back my results. Hopefully can afford some 1066 memory too.

My Q6600 runs fine at 3.2GHz on the 4pin CPU power...

Hi,

the Q6600 needs at least PC4200 ddr2 533 ram (1066 fsb), it cannot use PC3200 ddr2 400 (800 fsb).

Upgrade your ram.

350watt is nowhere near enough by a long shot,and when you do your ran do it 2x xx not 1x xx,some mobo's exhibit timing problems with 1x xx ram,and you never know until you try.:)

you should reset your CMOS if u change CPU, so much for basic upgrading...

Well ddr2-800 is no problem, I a using 4x1gb gskill ddr2-800 at 4-4-3-5.

DDR2-800 can handle to 1600 fsb.

Maybe if you have a hybrid motherboard like Asrock dual sata 2 with DDR and DDR2, you could use DDR1 400, but not ddr2 400.

Anyway, if you don't want to break the bank go for :

Corsair Value Select PC2-5300 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-667 VS4GBKIT667D2

or a more pricey DDR2-800 2x2gb kit.

I don't know where you shop, but memory is very cheap now, you may find some great deals.

It's basically your ram speed is not allowing the Quad to post.

 

That is why you have the DET DRAM Error.

 

The DDR2 400 (400/2=200mhz) will work fine for the E2140 since its an 800FSB rated CPU (800/4 'quad pumped'= 200mhz):

 

200x8=1.6ghz

 

Now the Quad on the other hand, is 1066FSB rated CPU, so it needs (1066/4 'quad pumped' =266mhz):

 

266x9=2.4ghz

 

The bios will not OC the ram to run the Q6600 stock. You would needs at least DDR2 533 (533/2=266mhz) to run it stock, unless you OC the DDR2 400 to DDR2 533 speed.

Ok that makes a lot of sense now, good post Grimmy. Now should I just go with the fastest memory my board handles, the 1066mhz. What else shoudl I look for in memory?

I was looking at picking this memory up. Kingston HyperX - 2 GB ( 2 x 1 GB ) - DIMM 240-pin - DDR II - 1066 MHz / PC2-8500 - CL5 - 2.2 V - unbuffered - non-ECC.

I can get this kit for $45 at my work, would this be good memory to get.

I'd get DDR2 800 CL4 memory. The DDR2 1066 memory is mainly OC DDR2 800 memory, and in some cases, some users have problems running that kind of OC'd memory on perhaps certain motherboards.

 

But I should stress that if your not going to OC, DDR2 533 is all that you need. You won't see much of a difference using faster memory unless your OC the CPU.

Only DDR2 533 CL3

Or if you trust Kingston:

The above would just be for running it stock of course.

 

For OC the CPU:

 

Again if you like Kingston:

 

Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

 

I basically use Mushkin but the 4gb (2 x 2gb) kit:

 

mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) with EPP Profile Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

 

It makes more sense to use DDR2 800 when OC'ing the CPU. Other then that, your not going to see much at all. And in some cases, running it at stock in benchmarks, the DDR2 533 still can be faster at a 1:1 ratio, especially at CL3 timings, if I remember correctly.

I will deffinently be overclocking the q6600 to 3.0ghz or more. So I should just go with the ddr2 800 even if the price is the same.

DDR2 800 at it's advertise speed, can get you to 3.6ghz, which increases it's TDP at 179W.

To go beyond that, you need a really good cooling system.

I find my Q6600 perfect at 3.2ghz, with speed step on.

Well upgraded the ram and PC boots up fine. Thanks for the help guys. For everyone that said the PSU was too small was completely wrong. Its small but I'm right at the edge.

Yea thanks again Grimmy. Went from a 6000 3dmark score to 11000 just with the proc and memory upgrade. No overclocking.

Yep, that is what I got at stock as well, 11k. Can't remember what I got at 3.2ghz though, I think it was 13 or 15k, with a slight OC on the 8800GTS (G92).

I did get a free copy of 3dmark Vantage for the memory I brought (Mushkin), although I think I may need to redo the tests since I'm on a different MB. :oops:

Sweet. I think I need a power supply, its holding my graphic card back I believe. My buddy has the same, mobo, Vcard, proc and he is hitting 15k overclocked. The vcard i have now he was running it in sli and scored 17k.
