Hi all,

I'm looking to build a server to archive my photos and documents for my business.

Been looking at the low power hdd vs the regular 7200rpms.

Does anyone use the LPs for your server? Is this a good route?

thx for your thoughts.

For archival storage with a relatively low I/O load, low power drives make a lot of sense. But be aware that many of these drives will spin down after a short period of inactivity - this can lead to a multi-second delay while waiting for the drive to spin up again on the first access to data. It's not a problem as long as people know that it may occur and understand that it's not a cause for concern.

after reading some more seem like green is the better choice and will prolong the life of the hdd. the only time i need performance is when i am transferring data onto the server.

Green drives are still fast (~100MB/s) when transferring large files sequentially, like when doing backups etc. They may also be more reliable due to less heat production and lower friction.

for your purposes, green would be fine

if you are looking for an efficient storeage method with minimal speed impact use SSD.
