Hi there!
I recently had an bad incident with my Dell Dimension e510 kicking the bucket because of a lightning strike. The processor, hard drive, optical, drive, and RAM are fine; the motherboard is shot, the PSU is proprietary, and the case is BTX. So I am buying a new mobo, case, and psu. The case and the PSU I can take care of, but the mobo is my issue.

--The processor is an Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4 GHz with HyperThreading.
--The RAM is two different sets:
1) [2] 1 GB sticks of Dell DDR2 (something like 533, but not 533? it was a weird number...) = 2 GB
+
2) [2] 512MB sticks of Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 533 (or 667, not sure at the moment because I'm at the college, it shouldn't matter right?)

so I have 3 GB of RAM.
--The hard drive is just a Hitachi 80GB SATA drive
--The optical is a DVD-ROM CD-RW combo drive (IDE)
--The video card is an ATI RADEON x600 with 256MB of HyperMemory RAM

I don't plan on building a high performance PC, just making a machine to run Linux on to teach myself about Linux. I am also planning on using it as a dedicated server for Garry's Mod (using Wine) for me and some friends to use... but I will be leaving it on a lot.

What motherboard would be best for me, I am wanting something not expensive but reliable and one that will work with my components.

Thanks for you help!

Some motherboards I noticed on NewEgg are:

and

I'm very "noobish" about this kind of stuff. I just got my first built PC (I helped build it, but they still messed up with the CPU cooler...I fixed it yesterday though...). My limit for mobo price is like 150 bucks, MAYBE 200...

Either will be fine just stay away from Asus, big trouble with them.

I suggest these cases:

Antec 900 or 300

I am planning on using the Antec 300 but a PC Power and Cooling 500W PSU.
Still don't know about a motherboard. I didn't like that one motherboard because of all the features. I need a simple, reliable, compatible motherboard with HyperThreading.
I don't see a problem with ASUS, I just bought and ASUS board and it works like a charm.

I'm leaning towards the Abit.

Never heard of the brand, so does anyone have any comments on Abit and this board in general?

The abit board will work fine; just be aware that upgrading the cpu will be more limited on an older chipset like the 965. You can also checkout foxconn and other lesser brands for a cheaper 965 board since you won't be overclocking your cpu . Newegg and Fry's had one for around $50 recently.

I don't plan on overclocking or upgrading the CPU. This is just so I have a linux machine in my house.
