What would you do to this build with $300???
Forum Homebuilt Systems : New System Build - What would you do to this build with $300???
Hey, So, my parents have given me a budget of about $1750 for this build for my birthday. The problem is that I have found everything I need and I'm about $300 short. I am going to order everything in about 2-3hrs hopefully. Could you guys look over my final build and tell me what to upgrade/add with the extra money and if everything is perfect? Thanks!
Motherboard: Gigabyte X48 (225) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128336

CPU: Q9450 (330) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115042
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 4870 (310)

Accessories that I'm using it with: Samsung 32in HDTV 1360x768
Klipsch ProMedia GMX 5.1 Speaker System
Sennheiser HD280 Pro Headphones
So yeah.
1. Is everything absolutely perfect?
2. What should I add/upgrade, it could even be a peripheral
Thank you guys so much, you have been a ton of help in the last few weeks. Without you I would have been an idiot and ordered a system or something. This forum is awesome!!!
If you have $300, I would throw on an extra 4870 for crossfire, everything else looks good to me.
$300 = going out and getting smashed my friend!! Its what bdays are about!
kkthanksbye
if you have $300 to effectively burn, maybe get a DDR3 board and spend the extra on DDR3 ram? other than that, i think just adding another 4870 would be good, but that would be $100 over budget.
Really? 4870 in crossfire with only a 1360x768 monitor?
I don't see what else you would spend it on, so that's what I would get, but it's up to you.
| darkmatter7 wrote : Really? 4870 in crossfire with only a 1360x768 monitor? |
i missed that little detail. ok your best bet would be to get a 20-22" monitor. the resolution would be alot higher than your tv and would look overall a lot better.
Do you think it's worth it, going from a 32in 1360x768 to a 22in 1680xwhatever? If so, can you recommend a few models?

it would be a fairly big difference. anything from samsung and probably dell would be good. i have a dell 20" and it's very good. i have nothing bad to say about it.
I didn't see any any mention about a power supply?
Edit:
If you plan to overclock, $300 will get you a decent water cooling set up.

Oh, sorry, I just forgot about the PSU. It's a PC Power and Cooling 750W. I already had that factored into the price though. My tv is samsung and I love it, so I guess I'll go with a samsung. Would the single 4870 be ok doing dual monitors w/ the 32in and 22in samsungs? I see it has 2 dvi out. Oh and where did the Sapphire dissappear to on newegg?

consider that the card would then have to drive 2 monitors, so it would need a fair bit of extra power, but the resolutions aren't too high, so i would say a single 4870 would be ok. but having a second one wouldn't hurt

Is this one good enough?

that one seems a little expensive for what you're getting.
Well, I can either go for the monitor or go for some other upgrade such as 4870 CF. Not both. What do you think I should do?
Do you know if the lifetime warranty still applies if you overclock?

i think you should get the monitor. and if anything, just don't use the tv if you run into framerate issues.
if you can afford an extra $50, you could pick up a nice dell 24" monitor for $350.

300 bucks eyy , that can buy you about 3 cartons of Premix Jack Daniels with coke
i say go out get smashed and get sum phun my mate , thats what i do every weekend
If you are looking at a new monitor, save a little more and get a Dell 2408WFP. One of the best monitors on the market and well worth the $$$. Otherwise get a second 4870 or a water cooling kit like this Swiftech setup. Everything else looks good!

that monitor is nice, but it costs almost double the other one. it might not be worth it for the OP.

Perhaps, but you get what you pay for.
Especially if his parents are paying for it...
Besides, it is a S-PVA panel compared to the other one's TN panel. No comparison, the S-PVA will PWN every time for image quality and viewing angles.

that's true, but without comaparing the 2 side by side, im not sure most people will even notice the difference.
Ok. Well, I Seriously reworked just about everything? Would all of you reccomend this over staying with my previous build and an extra 22in monitor?
Motherboard: Gigabyte X48 (225)
Memory: OCZ Reaper 4GB DDR2 800 4-4-4-15 (57)
CPU: Q6600 (200)
GPU: 2 x 4870 (600)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 640GB (95)
Power Supply: Corsair 750W (100)
Case: Antec Nine Hundred (88)
Cooling: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 + Mounting Bracket + Arctic Cooling MX2 (51)
Optical: Samsung SH-S203B (29)
Monitor: DELL ULTRASHARP 2408WFP (350)
All for a whopping $1793
What do you guys think? This, or the old build with no CF and either a 22in or this 24in???
Looks like a good build to me.

i would say it all depends on how happy you are with your current monitor. yes, the resolution is quite low, but if it doesnt bother you, then you dont really need a new one. but if you don't upgrade, the 2x4870 will be somewhat wasted. two of those will only show a real benefit at resolutions above 1920x1200 (which is a 24" monitor).
This is an excellent build, go for it.
Maybe an RC-690 case, unless you want all those lights, of course.
That looks excellent and I would stick with it over your last revision. The only thing I see is that the pricing for the 2408WFP is $679, not $350 but worth every penny.
Either way, I would defiantly get a 24" monitor with your setup. You will get much better visuals off a monitor than a tv. You can still use the tv for media purposes just fine, though.
If you don't mind the bad viewing angles, the monitor Nik_I suggests (Here) is not a bad choice. If you can afford it, go with the better one. You will not be disappointed.
BTW,
The Q6600 is an excellent overclocker. Good choice!

Yeah those cf 4870s will be great with that monitor
yeah, I think I need to take a trip to the store to really decide whether I should go with the monitor or not. I'll be back in a few mins. =)

Just remember to look at the monitors from an angle. That will show you the difference immediately!

Perhaps curb some of the monitor stuff and upgrade the CPU to the Q9450 would be the only other suggestion I would make.

Ok, so everyone thinks that this will be a much better build than the one that I originally posted in this thread? Like, absolute hands down consensus?
I would definately go with that build rather than your first one, I wish I would've waited to build my rig and got one like that lol.
Yes.
Your new build saves the cash in just the right places and gives you more power where you can use it. Go for it and don't forget to use you Q6600's "free" 3.0Ghz overclock. Stock voltages just bump it to 333FSB in the BIOS.

Sweet
Does everyone think the $350 dell is the best deal on a 24in monitor if that's the most I can spend? Oh, and are the Diamond 4870's ok if thats all I can get at this point? Everything but the Diamonds and Visionteks seem to have dissappeared.
Get a new monitor. That resolution is low. Games will look way better on a higher resolution screen, and you may actually get to use some of the power of that 4870.

$350 is a great deal for a 24 inch, I got my 22 inch Samsung for $330. The brand of the 4870's does not matter at this point, they are all the same. Although, for ATI, I prefer Visiontek but whatever brand you want to go with is fine.

Just hope that a year from now nothing goes wrong with your 4870's....

Wow, ok so I have been mulling over specs, reviews, and benchmarks, and it seems like crossfire 4850s is the definitive way to go over crossfire 4870s!!! Tell me which build you guys like more =)
4870 Crossfire build:
| darkmatter7 wrote : Ok. Well, I Seriously reworked just about everything? Would all of you reccomend this over staying with my previous build and an extra 22in monitor?
|
4850 Crossfire build:
Motherboard: Gigabyte X48 (225)
Memory: 4GB Corsair XMS2 DHX DDR2800 4-4-4-12 (80)
CPU: Q9450 (330)
GPU: 4850 x 2 (340) whichever of the brands on newegg is best
Hard Drives: Western Digital 640GB x 2 (190)
Power Supply: Corsair 750W (100)
Case: Antec Nine Hundred (88)
Cooling: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 + Mounting Bracket + Arctic Cooling MX2 (51)
Optical: Samsung SH-S203B (29)
Monitor: DELL ULTRASHARP 2408WFP (350)
Total: $1783
I'm thinking yum =) Tell me what you think!
I'd pick the version with the Q6600 and HD 4870 CF. A Q6600 is already plenty for most games, especially overclocked, so the Q9450 won't really add value.
I have to agree with aevm, I think you'll benefit more from CF 4870s rather than a faster processor and CF 4850s, but they are both very good builds.
I actually would prefer the 4850 crossfire build, for the reason that 2 4850 will be more than enough for your monitor. That will give you the extra cash to splurge on the extra HD and some other stuff
