I have a Gateway GT5676 running Vista 32-bit. My DVD drive is supposed to read and write all types of media but currently only reads/write DVD media. It will not read or write CD-R. Steps taken so far:

1. Removed upper and lower filters according to directions on Windows site.
2. Tested multiple types of media. Drive will read an audio CD and import into iTunes. Older software CDs have problems reading (if I insert 4 or 5 times some will eventually read).
3. Ran disk defrag and disk cleanup
4. Used laser lens cleaner dvd

Update the firmware.
Burn at a lower speed.

Drive may be bad.
