Which processor?
Forum CPU & Components : CPUs - Which processor?
I need a home PC to replace my Dell P4. The P4 is just way to slow and full of Dell preloaded junk. I'm in the market to spend about $400 on just the PC. I found a couple in my price range. Which is better:
Pentium Dual Core E2180 2.0 or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+??? Why??? I have some parts from my old Dell that I will put into these like a 8600 GT, SB Audigy SE. I would also like it to play WoW from time to time.
hmm not really sure tbh, but if you could get a core 2 duo, it would be better
Errr.
E2180 is C2D, so you're OK there, and its 1.8Ghz I think.
I can assume you of that.
Depends how good the PSU you're going to put in is, if its a good quality, 400w+ one, then the E2180 might be better because you could overclock it by a few hundred megahurtz.
How many Ghz is the 4000+ X2.
I'd probably recommend the E2180 though.

Sorry if I'm sounding like a n00b tonight, I'm very tired haha.
I do know my stuff.
Honest.

E2180 is a Dual Core not quite a Core 2 Duo. PSU is 300 watts. My Dell has a 300W and it handled my 8600GT. The AMD 4000+ is a 2.0 as well. I can probably get a 4200+ or 4400+ since it is cheaper than the Intel.

E2180 is cheap ****!!
It is £45 here, which is like <$90
A 4000+ X2 you could only get second hand here.

How is E2180 not a C2D??

Just remember. I'm on a budget and this will replace my Dell 3.0 P4.
Right.
Well, what are you going to not replace,
i.e. take from your Dell
And what stuff are you planning on buying?

I just need something in my budget and at least running 2 core. Single core computer are so slow right now.
You haven't answered my question.
New processor? Motherboard?
What?
I'm assuming you're buying
- processor
- motherboard
everything else from Dell?

New computer in general. Only thing I'm salvaging is my 8600GT and sound card from Dell.
GA-P35-DS3L
e2180 or better
2GB DDR2-800
Coolermaster Centurion 5
Reuse power supply (not sure, measure it), hard disk, video card, optical drive, etc.

If you go with my setup, overclock it.

Errrrr.
Right.
I think you should go look at the cheapest prebuilt "gaming" computers on eBay, ask them to remove the graphics card, and sound card (if applicable),
And make an offer on $200 or so,
That is probably your best bet.
Something liek this.

It's not optimal, but upgradeable.
$200 is *&%£ing tight man...
Stretch to $250 or $300 and you'd find a MUCH better PC...

AMD SETUP:
GA-MA78-S2H
AMD BE-2400
2GB DDR2-800
Coolermaster Centurion 5
Reuse power supply (not sure, measure it), hard disk, video card, optical drive, etc.
Doesn't need overclocking.

e2180 if you are going to overclock if not go with amd
^+1. The E2180 can easily be Oced to 3Ghz+. If not in to OCing get a AMD.

+1 e2180. because it is a known overclocker.
Ok thanks.
I am going to be an idiot and try to win him over to AMD.

Ghz doesn't matter, raw performance does. Bet my 2.2Ghz Athlon 64 will trash any 3.2Ghz P4.
C2D overclocks better (dispite the fact that the AMD 5000+ BE can still be found, and is a fantastic overclocker), but AMD takes the cake for cheap, solid power.
Also, AMD's budget chipsets tend to be better then Intel's current offerings, even though P35 is pretty good.
