ouch is right. Who would pay for that video card at that price.
People will. Not sure what the exchange rate is, but its nowheres near 1:1. People will buy these , I have no doubt, but to me, something with same power or a lil less and cheaper works for me
Reply to jaydeejohn
Thats actually cheaper than I thought it would be...
that's a little over $900 us/can
Message edited by COmmander_Keen on 06-10-2008 at 02:01:08 AM
Thats 911 US, in like 911 emergency
Reply to jaydeejohn
929.63$can and 909.08$us... ill never pay for a card at this price ...
I think this is of course an intro price, but at Ultra prices even so. I hope someone does, or its bad times for the green team.

^^^^ FINALY SOMEONE SAYS THAT!
i think everyone should follow that rule
Just waiting for my $300 sweet spot!

I usually pay about 400~500 US$ for my video cards, but then again I live in South America and we pay twice as much as you US folks do for our tech goodies.
So that things' going to cost about 1500 US$ here, yikes!

Just wait until valid/real benches are released.

thats low... I've seen the GX2 match 2 Ultras in Benchmarks, even get more! And the GX2 wasn't even oced.
Ofc not on everygame, it was noticeable the most in COD4.

But then again, that wouldnt happen with just one card as opposed to sli.
Reply to jaydeejohn
Here are some benchmarks, where GX2 is very close to two Ultras and the GX2 isn't Oced to match 2 9800 GTXs.
CoD4
HL2: Episode 2
Quake Wars
Colin McRae Dirt

Not that i'm saying I don't believe you, but I do somewhat find these benchmarks difficult to believe given THG has done similar benchmarks when the 9800 GX2 was released showing a single 8800 ultra matching/coming close to 9800 GX2 in a lot of cases
Maybe the driver support since then made a monumental difference, but I still have a hard time swallowing that.
I run 2 8800 GT in SLI (which is very similar performance to 9800 GX2 by a lot of accounts) and my numbers don't match that of 2 ultras ..
Message edited by ovaltineplease on 06-10-2008 at 04:00:01 AM
what are you talking about?
a 9800 GX2 comes close 2 8800 GTS in sli, the 8800 GT has lower specs :S
And yes the new drivers made a hugh difference considering my Crysis Frames jumped from 30-40 to around 70 at 1280 resolution.
You don't need to beleive me, you can search the web
.
Quad SLI still needs new drivers, it was stated in the review that they had alot more headroom.
I'm not knocking any other card down, but I'd like to see the 280 GTX make a revolution in frames, maybe 100+ frames in Crysis.
For me, I'm not keeping sides with any card, my friends owns around 2-3 computers stores, and I just exchange my components lol. So for me I just want to see huge for me to go through all the trouble of changing cards

Yea, those prices will come down. Considering the card hasnt released... lol, but I wont pay more than $650 (US) for one. Alas, I digress!

so what is better performance, 2 8800 GTS SLI or 2 8800 U SLI
I was under the impression that the 8800 Ultra was quite largely superior to a g92 GTS - especially at high resolutions/AA
So where does it fall?

Largely superior no, but superior none the less. 2x8800 Ultra's in SLI would be the winner in the battle. Especially at higher resolutions, but in most cases it would not be by a huge margin.

at 2560 * 1600 with AA and AF with settings maxed out the extra 256MB will own. I really like how Nvidia is moving graphics cards to almost 1GB of memory, I like this approach because it eliminates memory bottlenecks if there are any in games like Crysis, AoC, where there are massive amounts of textures.
thats fair then
it'd actually be kinda comical if the entire reason nvidia phased out the 9800 GX2 after the gtx280 comes out was because the gtx280 underperforms for its price/technology point lol

I am as well. I am excited about the 512bit bus along with the 1gb of ram and the new physics processing capabilities. I dont expect that AA filters or Resolutions (to an extend) will effect these cards performance all that much, which is what is most exciting for me.

At $600+ the card will most definitely underperform for its price point, but I dont live my life by price to performance ratio's. I do like getting good deals, but since I like to OC. I generally take the price to performance ratio of the CPU, then the overpriced GPU...combine my savings and cut my losses and call it even. lol, its worth it to me. I am not the kind of person who has ever bragged out how cheaply I bought something. But who doesnt like a good deal when they see one? lol

ohh well yea don't get me wrong i'm not a total price performance junky it'd be just kinda frivalous if it was only /on par/ with 9800 GX2 until 30" resolution.
I use a 21.6" and my max res is 1680*1050, so I am hoping it would perform better by a decent margin at the lower resolution - physics processor is a very good point though and I did overlook that admittedly.

yes, but i am certain at that price someone will release doves when you open the box...which might make it worth it
I just hope the GTX260 is price competitive with the 4870, but from the looks of it, the 260 might be competing with the 4870X2 or 4850X2, in terms of price that is. I dont know how well that is going to go..

I am confident that the GTX280 will crush the 9800GX2. I could be wrong, but if your lookin to buy the best card on the market within the next month. I would expect it to be the GTX280. I wouldnt mind if though if ATI surprised us the the 4000 series!
Ive actually always preferred ATI (though ironically...not AMD lol).
P.S. I love Ovaltine with skim milk! Hmm...good and good for you! lol

Actually the price keeps moving, but when it was first posted (before JDJ got it) it was just at $899.99 US based on the weekend close, now it's moved in price and it's at $895.xx
Anywhoo this kinda reminds me of the GF7800Ultra/GTS-512, launched at $649 also, and also with low volumes and likely jacked up prices, and equally likely someone will look at another solution (like two 8800/9800) similar to the two GF7800GT that in SLi made some people look to the unconventional answer. But also equally likely, the few GTX280 that do arrive regardless of price will be snapped up and even with pre-order prices above $700 there'll likely be people back-ordering them if they run out quickly after launch.

NoNo, that's her name. Lil' Dove. Wonderful, and very Flexible. Much better when working in SLi though.

The ultra cost this much in Australia until about 3 months ago. The 8800GTX was around $600. I expect over $1000 intro prices here, after 2-3 months settling around $850 and $950-1000+ for watercooled ones if they come out.

Imo...im believe that we will start seeing official reviews roll around in the time frame of the 16th - 18th.

Latter, can't wait to read benchmarks when the new GPU's come out.
I'm going to be doing some comprehensive benchmarks as soon as one of Nvidia's partners decide to send me a review sample.

More Ovaltine please! Rich chocolatey Ovaltine, now with vitamins!
I actually always really liked ATI too, to be honest I have run numerous ATI cards in my PCs with the exception of a geforce4 mx and my current build with 8800 GT SLI
Admittedly I did run with a Voodoo 5 5500 for a while and it was a nice performer while it lasted
I loved the ATI All in Wonder series, but I used to be a lot more into tv capturing back then than I am now - ATI's image quality was way better back in 1999-2001 imo. I used an ATI 9800 PRO (non-AIW) for the longest time actually, that was a great video card.
If the gtx280 does launch at like 800-1000$, then I most certainly will not buy it, but if its in the 600$ range i'll more than likely hit it up, maybe even 2 of them if it does "crush" the 9800 GX2
It gets 15% better than the 9800GX2 and I'm sold instintly! My 8800gt was only a temporary solution, I've been saving since Christmas for something that can truly max out Crysis and I hope this is it.
