I know versions have been asked hundreds of times (I have read them and am now more confused then before)

I am trying to figure out what chipset/motherboard to go with for my first build. The comp is used mainly for gaming and porn (hey, least I'm honest :ange: )

I have already picked out the E8500, 8800gt, 680 psu, vista premium 64bit and plan on running 4g ram once i figure out which mother board. I am not going to OC (not smart enough for that) and am not going to run dual graphics cards (too poor for that).

I just want a chip set/motherboard that will run everything properly without interference problems from the 8800gt's size. P35/P45/x38/x48/750i/780i..I'm so confused.. I'm not a tweaker and am not looking to win any competitions I just want it to work right, be reliable and not bottleneck the system.

Please post some of your reccommendations as I am truly lost at this point.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I have been looking at this card as it is in my price range. What cha think?

There ya go old timer, reason i picked this board for you:
1. Cant overclock even if you wanted to.
2. Reliable
3. Cheap (cheapest 4 ram slotted motherboard)
4. 4 ram slots for future upgrades

Since you don't want to overclock no need in buying a more expensive board, want something reliable, well this has to be it, built 2 computers with these mobo's and are running just fine in the Philippines (i say this because they are running in 95F degree rooms with TONS of humidity).

Any way enjoy.

If you have no plan to sli or cf, then go with p35 chipset. I recommend you gigabytes p35 ds3l because it is cheap. It will give you a decent oc with your cpu if you want to oc later on. But, if you want higher oc, i would recommend p45 chipset motherboard.

chaosgs, now thats a completely different chipset all together?? bah!!!!

I just looked at the mobo you were wanting.......LOL

Dont need that, the ECS board has 2 PCI Express slots as well (if you need them which you stated that you don't), it basically has everything the asus board has, but cheaper.

May be a different brand and all, but 100% compatible with what you want, BUT is cheaper than you were looking for, has 2 extra ram slots unlike the p35 suggested above. The biggest thing is there is no down side to the board i suggested.

costs a little more than what i suggested for the same performance (and 1 less PCI Express slot).

Ok, lets pretend that the nurses here at the old folks home would allow me to stay up past the 8pm curfew and read up on Ocing a wee bit. Maybe step me up a level or two in boards and toss me your reccommendation. I feel like I'm not "really" skimping that much on the rest of the system so lets pretend I'll figure this out before I die.

I think I would like to go no lower then a p35. For buildability and what nots.

Not familiar with that brand, so therefor the only input i have is it costs more than the last board i suggested and with the same specs.
Gigabyte is a very popular brand and reliable, plus in this particular case cheaper.

VEGIS?????????what in god's hell is that? Hope i die at age 70, i dont look forward to waking up with arthritis and back ache every day.

I just went through the same issues you did.

Based on your initial specs and desires here is what I recommend:

Get a motherboard based on Intel's P45 chipset that has a single PCIe 2.0 slot. That should narrow your search considerably. The P45 is the cheapest performance chipset that has support for PCIe 2.0. Furthermore since you will only use one video card there is no reason to get a board with more than one PCIe 2.0 slot since those slots are pretty much geared for video cards. It's basically that simple.

On newegg.com (which I recommend you buy all of your gear from) just filter your motherboard search by these criteria. Read the pro's and con's from other users.

I also recommend you get a motherboard that uses heatpipe cooling for the chipset instead of a standard heatsink. It's supposed to work better.

Here's a link to newegg motherboards that meet the criteria I recommended.

I've seen this board reccommended on this forum a few times.

Vegis=Veggies=vegatables=Something your mommy should have made you eat=something that helps old people poop proper.

Gonna pick between these last two reccommendations. Chaos, any reason to pick one over the other out of these two.

By the way, thank you all for not making feel like a complete moron. I do appreciate all the advise thus far.

The "16" is a merely a speed and bandwidth reference. It's currently the fastest speed and since you are only using one card you will get the full bandwidth. The link I gave you in my initial post has that option in the motherboard selection criteria.

Dont skimp on the motherboard or psu, stick to gigabyte and look into a decent psu etc - ask for recomendations here.

Video card - check what prices the AMD/ATI 4850 is going for aswell.

Again check your board to see what its standard is. Personally I went with DDR2 800 because it was the standard for my board and if I'm missing out on performance I wouldn't know it because my setup is great. I think it's safe to stay with DDR2-1066.

ddr 2 1200 mhz memory ... don't buy it... I got mushkin pc2 800 micron D9 chips and got it overclocked to 1200 mhz 5 4 4 12 timings.... from the base 800 mhz 4 4 4 12 timings

also get a 4850... you can get them for about a 150 now... and its better than the 8800 gt

Cool on the memory, switching to the video card; I thought all the reviews/tests still showed 8800gt as the best card with crysis as the test model? I guess I missed the 4850 winning. Checking them on newegg right now....

Get the DS3L, has everything you need and nothing you don't. (the DS3R has RAID, where the L board does not, and as far as I can tell you have no need for RAID)

IMO, you don't need that much of a power supply, you could save some money on a lower wattage model of equal or better quality. That being said, that power supply you linked there will absolutely work.

Still the same mobo though right?

Is that pcu okay?

Gonna use 4gig of ddr2 800 4-4-4-12 (still picking brand)

That psu is 610 compared to the bfg at 680. Asuming i never recieve the rebate (which seems to be the norm) is it a better psu with just less advertised power or what makes it a better one?

It is a tier 2 psu, and it is under $100. 610w will be plenty for your system as described. I have never not received a rebate on a product purchased from Newegg.

For RAM, several vendors have product selection configurators. You enter your mobo, and you get a list of supported ram parts. Corsair, Kingston, and Patriot have them that I know of.

The Corsair part would be twin2x4096-6400C4DHX

For what it's worth, Corsair and PC P&C have good customer support if you should ever need it.
