Hey guys I am building my first system and I need help picking my motherboard with the right chipset. I want to be able to watch and record TV in HD like Tivo, play and burn blue ray DVD's, music, school and some gaming work I have been doing some reasearch and I have and mind a Gigabyte mobo either P35 or G45.

Can any one advise me on this. Should I go higher with the chipset?Also does any one recomends gigabyte?
I forgot to mention that I want to overclock and upgrade.

Any ideas please shoot them.

sorry im not sure if i am looking at the right boards. is ether of these the p35 that you are looking at?

i could not find the g45. do you have a link for that? one note i have heard that the solid capacitor boards are not vary good.

for blue ray playback and gaming you need a graphics card. onboard chipset will not suffice. how much gaming? if little get something like 8600gt, or ati 3650. what procesosor will you be using? memory?

Yes the first link you posted is the board I was looking at and I was looking at the specs and it says that it has two PCI-E x16 but one of the slots is x16 an the other one is x4 and then I was looking at this other board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128089
and this one says that both slots are x16 what is the difference? would be worth it to spend the extra money for this board?

Yes, I know that I will need a video card to play HD format, but I was asking because I was reading on the specs on some of the chipsets and for what I understood was that some chipsets are better for HD, but if I am wrong please correct me. I am looking at this processor

If you are into video, Blu Ray, etc. I would look into AMD 780G, like:

That's what I am using but it's an Asus MB, I won't comment on Bluray but It can sure playback all the stuff I have recorded but it's not in HD at least not yet.

the two pic-e x16 slots are for crossfire. thats where you hook two of the same gpu's together. if you want to do that you need two pci-e slots that are full x16. some boards have what appears to be a x16 but when crossfire'ed they only run a x8 or some evan run as slow as x4

If you're looking to upgrade, don't go with either of those two. Unless you mean just get a better GPU and not Xfire or SLI, then yeah go with what you have maybe something a little cheaper.

If you're planning to run Xfire or SLI, then i suggest you get an X38 chipset (for Xfire) or a 680i SLI (for SLI obviously). They will offer more upgrade options.

Not I am not trying to run neither Xfire nor SLI, but I do plan on upgrading do you think that a P35 would work for the things I am trying to do if not can you recomend a better chipset?

No, if you don't plan on Xfire or SLI then the P35 is great.

Get a p45 instead. At $99, it cost the same as some of the cheapest p35 out there, and overclocks far better, almost as good as x38/48, which cost around $200.

well if you are going to use a dedicated gfc then go with a P35 board, but if you are hoping to save money using onboard gfx then 780A is the key .

The 90nm MSI P45 motherboard listed in an above post scares me just because it looks so cheap

Q9300 should be a good processor...get an e8400 if you wanna spend a little less or a Q9450 if you wanna spend a little more
