Forum CPU & Components : CPUs - Want a Penryn processor crack open an apple!
Last message on previous page:
I implied this pretty strongly earlier... But the Apple/PC argument seems to have center stage at the moment.
(1) Intel do not, will not, and as far as I know can not, sell AMD products.
(2) Therefore for AMD products to be used, Apple would have to drop Intel and pick up AMD as a supplier. This has not happened.
(3) The article clearly states that Intel is the supplier.
(4) The article also gives a X9** part number for this 'special' processor. This is an Intel part number. Not AMD.
(5) The article also says an Intel motherboard is being used. To my knowledge, AMD processors do not physically fit into current Intel sockets, nor are they compatible with Intel Chipsets.
(6) The article makes no mention of AMD at all, with the sole exception of the code name 'Penryn' used in one sentence.
THEREFORE IT IS LOGICAL TO PRESUME THAT THE WRITER OF THE ARTICLE DOESN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PENRYN AND A HARPERTOWN, and so this thread owes it's very existence to a typo.
This has been a public service announcement. We now return you to your PC/Apple Flame War.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html
300+ New Features!
It would be better to call it something like: "290 cosmetic changes, and 10+ new features that are useless to most users!"
For example... time machine... a lame rip off of volume shadow copy... fine fine its a good feature to have... except for the fact that you NEED a physical separate harddrive for it to work. Hell even bootcamp isnt free.

Mac only come in one version
| jimmysmitty wrote : Sorry. My computer dyslexia has been kicking in a lot recently. I miss words or read the backwards...it gets annoying. But you are right. Only problem is that not every older MAC will support OSX. It does take some of the newer hardware. But still the OEM versions should count as they are plentyfull and easily accessable from a online retailer.

I totally disagree with the Macs are over rated bit...
1.. When have you ever, ever seen a PC look like anything Macs have done....
2.. Have you designed something on a Mac against a PC, then ripped it out to print... Macs are with out adoubt the best piece of kit for Photoshop, Desktop Publishing and image rendering than any pc.. Its built for it...
All high end graphics are done on a mac in games... I know the guy that did Hogwarts Castle in the last harry potter game... It was designed on a mac then transfered to a pc.. the pc would have taken 3 times as long to do due to its old architecture background it has to keep with..
3.. Less Viruses than any pc platform
4 Take up much less space..
5.Office on the mac is just that much better
6 It aint got Vista... Bonus
7. The keyboards are just the muts nuts...
8. They had had soft power on before any pc ever did
9.. Earlier ones even ejected floppy disk..
10. The screens are to die for..
11. Less twits us macs than PC's and girls usiing them seem to be rich totty..

Time Machine is an excellent integration of back-ups into an OS. Is there anything in XP or Vista that is even remotely like it?
It's simple to use, incredibly easy to back-up from (I have done), very simple GUI and gorgeous graphics (
That's important to me....
). It's an ace bit of kit, but I don't like the fact that you can't do wireless back-ups unless you buy Apple's Time Capsule, which is a real kicker for me....

Nope.
How do you run an OS X server... oh yeah!!! OS X SERVER
Then there is a multi-user licence.
Reply to LukeBird
Mac's are over rated. They won't run without that special hardware that tells the software, Pssst.. its okay, this sucker paid enough, you can install the OSX.
Mac wants you to think different when it isn't different.
You have to pay extra for a floppy drive.
If Mac software wasn't so pricey... I'd be using it.
quick notes to the above post!
1. Likewise, when have you ever seen a mac do what a custom PC has done?
2. what are you stuck in 1997? This is a myth that has long been thrown out.
3. ... are you that dense? PC platform? OSX is a PC platform... I think you meant to say windows... which is technically correct... but it sure isnt because its so much more secure.
4. what?
5. what? office is better? office for windows and office for mac are the same damn thing.
6. but it has OSX *yuck*
7. I can use any keyboard I want
9. You do realize that apple rips everything off from the open source community right?
10. The screens have had so many issues that no series graphic designer would ever consider using one.

What is this? You say that Apple copied Windows? No way...Apple so had this before and Windows copied it even though Windows had it a long time ago..........

Yes, volume shadow copy. It has been around for A VERY LONG TIME, and it doesnt require a separate hard drive... making Volume shadow copy much more useful for the general population
PS. Im not necesarily bashing apple, Im bashing apples PR campaign and the religious following they have created.

its been around in a usable form since server 2003. Its enabled by default on vista: Windows Vista's backup utility, System Restore and the Previous Versions feature.
I give credit to apple for making a fancy gui for this... although I think vistas table listing is A LOT more intuitive and buisness oriented than apples implementation.

1 All pcs are just boxes
2 I have used macs in the print industry and pcs just dont do it...
3 OSX is a modified linux platform... which is when patched very secure and has not spyware. Vista the latest os is poop
4 Have u seen the new macs.. I guess not
5 Mac Office is better than Windows it has features that pc just dont have.
6 Believe me Windows Vista is shat... Compared to anything else and before it..
7. Yes but mac keyboards are Just Class and fit with the rest of the kit.
9.. I wasnt talking about apple, i was on about Adobe Creative Suite and Quark..
10 I was talking about the 30 inch monster..
Ok now pcs
1.. Great if you want to spend you life upgrading it more than using it...
2.. Costs loads to get anything decent looking and working well.
3.. Great for games in between building and upgrading hardware
4.. 3D graphics are just out of this world in games...
5.. Excellent for Database work, General Office work, accounts, small photo work and web stuff..
6.. Various customization components...
7.. Generally faster than macs in normall use
8.. Industry standard software which is generally backward compatible
9.. Millions of software for it.
10. Great comminuties with loads of help from pc enthusiasts like this forum

1. The why the hell did Mac switch to intel?
2. So you don't have your own, why not?
3. I use linux and its free.
4. Don't really care to, the last I saw a Mini Mac which I considered, but after seeing the $500 price tag I said no way.
5. I use Open Office, it's FREE.
6. It's prolly shat because you don't know how to use it.
7. Keyboard with an apple logo just makes it more expensive.
8. Oh wait you didn't list 8.
9. I guess I have no comment on this or # 10.

Add to this the custom PC cases. Like the HL2 one that guy made. Looked awesome. Heck one guy made his PC case into a TF2 Engie Sentry. Don't know how you can beat that.

1. PC can be ANY shape/size/material/color you want. All apples look the same. They are not special. You are not special.
2. I am very skeptical, that you have any experience in any industry, but besides that fact, yes PC (rather windows) is used extensively in the "print industry"
3. No, OSX is a modified unix platform. Unix is ANCIENT and not nearly as secure as apple wants you to believe.
4. Once again, you can make a PC ANY shape/size/color/material you want.
5. You do realize that microsoft develops office right?
6. your opinion means very little, as i assume your under lying knowledge of any OS is extremely limited to GUI screenshots.
7. Ill try and put this in a way you can understand... Mac, and PC can use any keyboard they want. This kind of a moot point.
9. Luckily adobe finally updated creative suite for MAC, how many years had it been?
10. 30 in monster? Its just a large LCD using cheap parts that they sell for way to much. Real graphic designers use CRTs anywho. Also note that their imac monitors have severe color reproduction issues.

And how many times and how long have you used Vista? Vista is a good OS. Stop being like Apple and just bad mouthing Vista/PCs without any proof... its all your opinion.

debian and freeBSD are the only cool choices.
@amdfangirl... well to be fair, the 30in apple has a much much higher resolution

Impressive. I didn't really understand the rant this thread started with, and I'm not sure where went.
For a mac as a wintel gaming platform though, doesn't a dual quad-core Intel with an 8800GT work well? I really don't know, I don't bother watching benchmarks at apple sites and don't use one myself, it just seems like a decent spec sheet, if a bit more server than workstation.
Having installed several Macs though, Apple does provide little clips and package everything more thoughtfully than most PC distributors. Maybe that justifies the premium cost to some.
I like Vista. I wouldn't run it on any computer designed to be run with Windows XP though. Just as I wouldn't run XP on a computer from 1998. I wouldn't just up and upgrade from XP to Vista, but getting a new computer I got Vista cause it's practically the same price for OEM.

Maybe to a small percentage, but the vast majority buy them because it says apple on it.

Why not just get a real organic apple and duct tape it to the keyboard or case?

LOL..... I love Grimmy. Hes funny.
Macgirl, calm down. We are not anti-mac but MAC just isnt part of thr PC enthusiast crowd. We like things we can build, OC and make kick ass. Not things we can pay too much for, pull out of the box and turn it on <--------------- Whats the fun in being able to turn it on out of the box?

After reading all this marketing I think I'll just stick to my Ubuntu rig, it's Unix and does the same things for free.

Not Mac bashing, but this one is pretty funny, http://video.google.com/videoplay? [...] rgKH1Jn0Bw
And for you mac heads who want to spout your 'Macs dont get viruses and spyware' crap, its not cuz your platform is so much more secure, its because theres no fun in attacking such a small group of people.
Makes me want to learn how to write viruses...
Also you need to snap out of your 'PC Sux' mode. I hate to break it to you, but PC stands for Personal Computer. Pretty sure that means a Mac too, even before they moved to Intel. You need to understand that you hate WINDOWS, not PCs.
Ive used OSX, its alright, but I wasn't overly impressed. I can make Windows do whatever I want to do, so I have no need to move to anything else. As far as Linux, I want to learn it, but I just cant get motivated to take the time.
