Its one thing having a IGP that doesnt really woek, but even when it doesnt work, it still underperforms in power usage http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipse [...] i=3288&p=1 Ive been hearing that the 45s from Intel are having other problems as well, DX10 and some decoding problems. Doesnt look very green for ol Blue

maybe the G45, which is the equivalent to the nVidia and AMD ones, will do better. But we have to wait and see right?

Maybe they cut the funding for IGP and gave them to Larrabee development team. :D

I agree, Intel IGP sux0rz. My friend's X3100 couldn't even run DX10 properly.

I hope so. Intel needs to trash their old IGPs and go Larrabee team. We need it, they need it, and whats with the G45? Ive been hearing theyve been having problems with it? Is it still on track for delivery date?

How many people that get/have an IGP really expect it to run all that great anyway? I'm not saying that they should suck, but I think most people that have an IGP just surf the net, do some word processing, and do some excel type of work. I'm not trying to sound critical, but I wonder what people really expect from such a component.

Perfect for a huge segment. HTPCs. Thats IF the IGP actually works. Both nVidia and ATI are coming with even better IGPs soon, and better chips too (NB/SB) so theyll actually deliver alot of light gaming, as well as all the things a true HTPC should deliver, low power, low heat, decode, light gaming etc. So far Intel lacks this ability in a HUGE way. Im looking forward to the G45s answer to all this

Well here at Citibank they expect us to be able to play Crysis at 10FPS unilke the Intel IGPs that wont even load the game.

/sarcasm

Dude most businesses want a cheap IGP. They can get the Dells/HPs cheaper wince its cheaper for Dell/HP to buy the mobo and CPU together than worry about which IGP it has.

Yes it will go great for HTPC's but believe it or not a lot of people tend to prefer the TiVo. Mainly cuz its preconfigured and plug and play.

As for the power, its not that bad and we really have to wait. I am pretty sure that the IGP in Nehalem will be based off of Larabee since Nehalem and Larabee are set to be released around the same time.

some people want to run vista aero if nothing else :p

Oh yeah that segment. I guess it's just not that popular of a thing where I am. I wonder what % of the population use there HTPC's for there intended purpose? I agree though that Intel isn't up to snuff on the IGP market.

Also, its very very very important to the future of PC gaming. Read some of the gaming stories here on Toms? All the devs have mentioned the inability of a average oem built PC to play games. Itll be a first time experience for those potential PC gamers, and if its Intel, theyre buying an XBOX, but if they have a halfway decent IGP from wither nVidia or ATI, theyll enjoy what they have, and want more

Guess that's why the console market is killing the PC gaming market too. I'd rather game on the PC for most games, but as you're saying first time PC gamers are probably going to experience the average low end PC before jumping into an investment for a "real" gaming PC. I can agree with that more now that I think about my first PC gaming experiences. Basically I gamed on my parents PC when I was younger and most parents aren't usually looking to drop extra coin on a quality "gaming" PC when they can get one for cheap from Dell, and HP, hell my neighbors even had an E-machine...I just puked in my mouth a little bit. Anyway I see your point about the HTPC's and the beginner systems.

That being said, I'll still never buy a PC with an IGP, but I see there importance now. Thanks jaydeejohn.

I believe the TiVo is USA-only, at least for now. HTPCs still have a future in the rest of the world :)

It does make me wonder if Intel really has in them to create a really good IGP. I'm not saying that they aren't listening or don't want to make a good product, but sometimes the best a company can do isn't up to what the competition can do. If Intel and Nvidia both make good IGP's I hope that AMD/ATI don't get so crushed that they have to give up completely. I'm not really a fan boy of any companies, but I do hope that we get some truely tight competition. I love to have to make hard decisions on new hardware, but lately it's been pretty clean on what companies are making the best stuff overall. Oh well, I'm out.

Why do we need it? IMHO, we don't need it. Intel's only reason for IGP is the business market. The sad thing is too many people buy Dell's, Gateways, HP's etc. based on specs that never mention the graphics. How often do you see an ad that mentions graphics? They'll mention the CPU, RAM, monitor and hard drive space, but leave out the IGP.

They buy based on the CPU and get Intel IGP. That doesn't disappoint business, which largely hasn't migrated to Vista, but it does disappoint people who want a good family PC for applications, DVD playback and light gaming.

The future of IGP is what AMD and Nvidia's basically doing, putting a full overclockable low end GPU on the board useable alongside another low end discrete GPU for hybrid multi-GPU. Intel simply cannot compete:

G35 just can't cut it:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inqu [...] -needs-fix

G45 has H264 decoding problems:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inqu [...] e-problems

What will Larrabee bring? A change in how game graphics are coded that developers might not embrace? That Microsoft might not support fully? Analysts are doubtful that Intel can pull it off, and I am too.

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/nvidia [...] -1064.html

IGP's are useful. Intel needs to provide decent IGP's that work at least as well as the 690G's, if not the 780G's. Besides business and HTPC, kids computers generally don't need anything as powerful as our gaming GPU's. My 7 year old has a 780G and I'll add a 3470 next month for hybrid Crossfire. He uses it for home schooling educational software as well as for Fate and HOMM III, IV and V.

So, no one should dismiss IGP just because they don't use it. IGP power saving features are coming that make IGP useful for enthusiasts beyond simply showing a new motherboard's post before setting up a discrete card (which is how I do it). AMD's Swift might even make for a triple GPU hybrid CrossfireX and both AMD and Nvidia are working towards power savings for more capable discrete GPU's that are too robust for hybrid Crossfire. So, some light gaming for the masses can be had that far surpasses Intel's offerings.

Too bad Nvidia doesn't have a CPU, and AMD's CPU's are falling behind. If both had mainstream CPU's even almost as good as Intel's, I'm sure they'd gain such a market share with good platforms that include chipsets, IGP's and hybrid Crossfire and SLI that leaves Intel out in the cold.

I remember Intel execs saying before they first put IGP's on motherboards that discrete graphics cards wouldn't be needed in the future. Well, Intel's IGP's didn't kill a need for SIS, Trident etc. 2D cards alongside Voodoo 3D cards, and I doubt that Larrabee will kill Nvidia and ATI GPU's.

Yeah I'll agree with that, but do you remember the last Nvidia chipset that didn't end up having some sort of flaw? NF4 maybe?

Bad Test Setup - They should used one of the 35w Single Core Intel Chips instead of a Dual 65w if they used a single core AMD.

its not good theory.
