If amd,.....IF AMD,....put a Phenom on the market clocked at 3.4ghz (stock),...what sorta Intel would that put in its league,...presuming that the TLB bug was completely fixed!

If AMD had such a processor, then Intel would have a 4.5ghz processor, and AMD would be in the same boat.

If AMD could have put out a Phenom at 3.4 ghz, I'm sure AMD would have. And if AMD had spent the time and money that they put into are the marketing hype on research instead, maybe Phenom wouldn't have so many problems. But for the past year and a half, we kept hearing about how great the new architecture was, how fast it was, how it would beat Intel's C2D and Intel's quads. Now we know; the new architecture stinks, the Phenom is slow, and it can't beat the older AMD X2 chips, much less any of the C2Ds and quads.

You can follow the "if only" story forever, but it can never make up for reality.

It could be possible AMD would have a "select" Blackened Edition of the Phenom 10000 with a nice TDP of 300W!

Jeez guys, what if we answered his question? It's a hypothetical.

Intel could counter it with a 3.0-3.2 GHz Quad, and probably push it to 3.6 GHz if they wanted to in order to compete.

Intel's highest clocked non-extreme quad is still 2.66 GHz (soon to be 2.83 GHz).

It would simply increase the default clock speeds of it's current Processors.

The 45nm Quads easily do 4.0Ghz already.
And the Penryn are about 20% faster than the Phenom so that would be about a 4.8Ghz vs the 3.4Ghz Phenom.

So Even a AMD-FanBoy Wet Dream can't match what Intel has to offer today.

It might make more sense to glue two 5000+ BEs together and give them a high clock, since the 5000+ BE is a 65nm part. Of course, gluing two X2s together would mean admitting that Intel had it right when they did that, and AMD does not want to admit that they made a mistake when they made a "native" quad core.

Or the re-engineering it would take to get two Memory Controllers to work togther.

I thought this was impossible due to the IMC.

If anyone was looking today, amd came out with a black edition of their quad core phenom... and it still stinks to high heaven.

Even if the bug was worked out of it and they came out with a stock 3.4 quad... Intel would respond with 4.0 or a 4.5 stock quad.

so for everybody thinking amd is gonna come out with a quad that is fixed and runs @ 3.4 anytime soon
.....I see a lot of flying MC rib sandwiches.....

I believe his question wasn't if it was possible or what intel would do in response, but what would it compete with? I would say a 3.4 phenom would compete with the 2.8 or 2.6 standard quads intel has now. propably not quite as fast as the 3.0 EE though.

It was hypothetical. :kaola:

But then again, I dont think it was really that far off base. the E8400 can be easily pushed to 4ghz already. And assuming that AMD could produce a better chip, I still think Intel would be able to "one up them."

I think its possible that IF IF IF AMD had a 3.4ghz quad it may compete with the Q6600.

Might as well just make it a single Memory controller. Which is the Phenom we have today.

If AMD did have a 3.4GHz Phenom, which they can't due to the massive leakage they'd get at that speed, then Intel will counter it with 3.6GHz or faster. Intel has successfully reached 4GHz on the C2D, but they felt it wasn't necessary to release such a cpu.

You got that right... who knows what is lurking back in the shadows of Intel... methinks a 10.5ghz monster is hidden somwhere in the secret dungons of their Santa Clara, CA main offices. :pt1cable: :kaola: :sol:

I think if AMD had this mystery processor Intel would have a 32core, 25GHZ, 1watt beast…. AND we would still be waiting for something better.

If they (intel) have a massive multicore AMD killing beast, they should name it Medusa.
