2 laptops one connects the other doesn't

Hello, I have scoured the net, including the forums here, and have not found a solution yet. I am using someone elses modem and router until they move soon and I don't have access to router admin privileges, I will when I connect my router. So here's the problem I can connect both to LAN and wireless, the router is a Dlink DI-524 and the modem is a Speedstream 5100 with my Aspire laptop using windows XP sp2 but with the other laptop Gateway solo 5300 running same system can connect to both LAN and wireless but no internet, I can't ping the default gateway, I have tried to repair the connection and renew and release the I.P I have flushed the DNS. I have tried to clear the winsock, no firewall is enabled. I have checked the dependancies and it looks all good, I have tried to compare the IPCONFIG /ALL. I'm at a complete loss. Like I said in the beginning I don't have any admin access, so all I can do is try different things on the laptop. I don't understand why one machine connects fine and the other refuses to?
