Does it have an FM tuner? No. (An FM tuner is a wonderful feature for listening to football games when I'm on the run.) Does it have memory expansion options? No. Does it play video? No. Does it support a wide range of formats?

Are the batteries user replaceable? No. :fou:

How's the sound quality? Sucks.

Have to take issue with you there - not all of them suck. My 5.5G is fantastic, and IIRC the 2G Nanos are pretty good as well. Earlier versions weren't as good though, and I hear that 6G (and 3G Nanos) may have some sound quality issues.

I use a pc for everything. I do have an old mac ibook 500mhz that i use to surf the web out in the living room. I recently retired it because i bought an ipod touch. I dont want to sound pompus and I certainly dont think that I am better than anyone. I just want to defend it a little since everyone is bashing ipods. First and formost i love the touch interface. it is fast responsive and i have never had it crash. I can surf all my websites from it and I dont have to lug a laptop around the living room. the display is amazing. as far as audio quality goes It is an mp3 player which means that I can either encode in a lossless format and store 3 songs on it. or i can encode to mp3 and store thousands and loose audio quality. So i choose mp3 if I wanted to hear every single nuance of my music i wouldnt be listening to it through headphones and an mp3 player in the first place. It is jailbroken and i can use it as a voip phone, there are all sorts of hacks and mods for it out which is great. Now for the disadvantages. I hate having to take it out to change tracks or the volume. I hate Itunes, but it is not as closed source as everyone says I bittorrent seasons of tv, use vidoera ipod converter and it sync them to itunes. is it a pain sort of, but I also own a blackberry 8830 and would have to convert my videos for that also, and i have a better screen on my touch. the way i see it is this I own a bb because stuff just works. I dont have to tweak a bunch of settings like with windows media phones. It doesnt crash as often as window media phones. the same with the ipod i dont want to do a million setup options in order to get stuff to work. and it is rock solid. As far as saying im lazy fine, but as far as technology has came i should be able to be lazy. stuff should just work. that is the reason i am going back to xp from vista, i am tired of fiquring out why something says vista compatible or made for vista breaks my machine. and spending six months trying to fiqure out why.

Well I can't say that I hate them but I will say I don't really like them. I think people who buy apple products are a little dumb because all their stuff is way overpiced. And I also agree about the fact that apple users seem to look down on us pc users, I know some apple users and a big majority of them are like that. It makes me laugh and when I get that attitude I always say to them that I envy them because they must be rich to afford such overpriced crap /sarcasm.

I was watching the football games last night (Green bay vs. the Giants) and there was a new Mac commercial on. Now Mac has the ability that if you delete something you can get it back. They were saying like PC does not do this... I flipped out on my TV yelling at it hopping that Apple's Marketing can hear me calling them idiots because windows has been doing this for... lets see... EVER!

I remember the good days when you deleted something on a Mac and it was gone, and that was that. I remember the Mac users saying it was dumb to have that security because you only delete things you want. Now they are signing to the tune that this is great and how great they are because they can retrieve data that was deleted.

Anyone got a link to this new ad? (youtube or something?)

Ive not seen it yet, personally im curious lol.

just looked up the "Apple Commercial - New Year 2008" video on youtube ad, which made me laugh...tarting up all the things apple have done in 2007 that has "owned" the PC/Microsoft over 2007, even though in reality they were spectacular flops.

Kbits, the point I was really making was I thought the main reason people got a Mac was to get rid of Windows, but ironically they still need Windows to do anything. This alone proves that OSX is not as good as the Mac fanatics claim it is. Also, the subdued point I was making, which you valeted for me as well, is why spend $2,000 on a iMac when a $600 HP machine will do the same exact thing and so much more.

No, OSX isn't the Nirvana that some mac fanatic want us to believe, but it is certainly a capable OS and isn't the piece of junk that some other people want us to believe.

The $600... wait let me check ... $790 HP won't do the exact same things than the 2000$... wait... 1200$ iMac can. First it won't run OSX and Windows and all related software (yes i know about the OSX86 project, I use it, but it ain't for everyone out there). If it isn't important for you, or don't like OSX, then yes it makes little sense to buy one. But some people like it, it's just the way it is. I don't consider them as more dumb or lazy, they just feel more comfortable in it. Computer takes a lot of place in our lives, might as well go with what you're the most at ease with no?

You would need to define the "so much more" a $790 HP can do that a iMac can't. Yes there is more software available on windows, but except for some very specialized task, both environment have what it takes. Instead of having 30 ripping softwares, there is ten on OSX. On windows, 1/3 are good, 1/3 are average and 1/3 are poor, and so on OSX. So unless I'm missing something important here, it all boil down to some exceptions.

The real big difference imo is for games. OSX have a fair share of games, and of course there is bootcamp, but there is no way mac can compete with a well built PC. Apple users have despise the graphic card situation on macs for years, and for good reasons. But the $790 HP box and his 8300GS is not exactly a gaming horse (as a matter of fact, it is quite the same as the 2400HD in iMacs).

Granted, macs are more expensive then PC, and usually, you get more hardware performance from a PC (especially if you build it yourself). But Apple is on it's own, and development of OS, software and hardware cost certainly more than what HP spent on their $790 box and their slipstreamed Vista HP suite. Again, it's all a matter of preference if you think it deserve to get your money or not, but I think to have this option around is on the bright side of things. Apple do competition to Microsoft, HP, Dell and all the others, and this is good for us users.

At the end, I think most people on this forum, including me, likes to keep control on things, do what the hell they want, and get most of the $$$ they spend. This is why Dell/HP/Gateway doesn't get very good feedback in most threads here. And from this point of view, Apple do even worse. But as I already said, from a computer enthusiast perspective, I like what alternative Apple brings into the computer landscape.

Same goes for Windows

KBits wrote :

Yes it will, not to mention you can build a $790 PC your self and do MUCH more than that $1200 mac.

KBits wrote :

Who the hell cares about OSX... I have Windows and linux... why would I want some crap apple software on my new machine.

KBits wrote :

First of all, you cant even buy an iMac at $790 (nor can you buy them for less than $500 wich a lot of PCs are selling for these days). Second... and again this is quite simple... $790 gets you more hardware than an equivalent mac.

KBits wrote :

What? Not only is there more software on windows... but there is much better quality software on windows and Linux. What professional Applications run on macs? photoshop? yup thats about it.

KBits wrote :

ROFL... A fair share? They have a few... older games.

Jobs may be slipping, or else his 'reality distortion field' may be fading - the Macworld revelations this year were pretty unexciting, even to Mac nerds.

The worlds thinnest notebook!! Yea, it's thin Steve, real thin. So what? Think I'm gonna sacrifice a hard drive speed, ethernet, user replaceable battery, durability, a bunch of $$, and my optical drive just so I can have a super thin notebook? Its a computer, not a supermodel!

Who cares if it's a little thinner than a full function laptop?

I only have three things against my ipod:

1) Forces a gap between tracks - listening to Tool: Lateralus just isn't the same. I think I saw a way to crack the firmware for it but I've been too lazy so far, heh.

2) The propeitary lossless compression codec. Nothing wrong with alc, it really is lossless, I just wish .shn was supported.

3) Volume loss with last firmware update. Still plenty loud with earbuds, but with some of the 'old mixed' cds, it definately could be louder for headphones. I also don't like that it did the firmware update without asking me.

Other than that, it's great. Battery still gives plenty of juice after using it for about three years, it's solid as a rock and dependable.

For Apple computers, I plan to purchase a MacBook Pro soon, but I'll be sticking with a PC for my desktop. I've dealt with frustation with PC notebooks, they're just not worth it.

Hell I wish FLAC was supported too...its way better than shorten...and my entire library is FLAC (I think there are players that support FLAC already)

OS points:
Gates = take over the world by being compatible with it all (to a degree) then once they are all sucked in, force the upgrade to the newer better version.
Jobs = take over the world by being more stable (on only your own company's hardware) and then when they are sucked in....no one else will be left as they are forced to buy all hardware/software and accessories from you and only you/Apple.

Doesn't every O/S steal something?
Doesn't every hardware upgrade force your hand in some way?
Doesn't every software upgrade force your hand in some way?

BTW, I still keep my vote the same, I wouldn't trade my PC for anything, and I love my Vista Ultimate!
