Summary of what I need
Price Range: 30-80 dollars
Gigs : 40-100 GB external hard drive
Contents on drive: Music and pictures which will be played from the external drive
Preferred brands: I have never had any problems with Seagate, but i hear western digital isn't bad
Other: My main concern is cheap cheap cheap, but still is able to get the job done...... I know that I can get like 500 gigs for only 30 more bucks but I don't need that, if I can save 20 bucks by backing off like 400 gigs thats fine, im a poor college student

Extra Info
I am currently a student in college, so right off the bat I do not have much money to spend, ideally looking for something between about 40-100 gigs, I am pretty sure I do not need anything above 100 gigs. My current hard drive on my laptop is 80 gigs and is full of music now and other random crap. Im looking to buy an external hard drive to store all of my media such and pictures and music. I plan on moving all of my music to this external hard drive and playing it from there so i guess I need something that is fairly fast and can play music off of it without any trouble.

I really do not know nearly enough about computers to make a good decision of my own on this one so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

should suffice.

you can pay $72 for 160gb or $84 for 250gb and free delivery.

you could try buying a 2.5" caddy off ebay and pairing it with a 2.5" disc of 80-120gb but im not sure how much of a saving you would make.

oh and make a backup (dvd-r) of your most important stuff like assignments/projects - you could also try getting a gmail account and emailing yourself your documents (which is what i did).

Yea thanks, i'll keep those in mind

do they come any smaller though b/c I really don't have much cash and I don't think i'd ever get close to using up 160 gigs worth of any kind of information considering its only going to have music pretty much on it and my Ipod is only 80 gigs.

Do u know of any decent cheaper ones that are just smaller size and less price? my computer is pretty old and this is just kind of a temporary fix until I get a new one

well you could ask around your friends see if anyone has an old one they want to upgrade and want to get rid of their old one.

ebay is your friend, just have to hunt for it.

your other issue is if your laptop is old it might not have usb2 so it will take ages to transfer.

The main thing here would be connection... do you have firewire on your latop? esata? or are we talkin USB only?

If you only have USB, any external drive will do. Also, consider thumb drives?

my computer isn't THAT old, im not sure what esata is but I know I have USB only 32 gigs for 60 bucks seem like a bit of a rip, if I just paid like 12 more bucks I could get 160 gigs..... Ideally I want like 80 gig external for like 50, but i dunno can't seem to find something along that, honestly just looking to spend about 40 - 50 bucks, is there any chance?

If you have a BestBuy near your check their ad. www.bestbuy.com
I've seen 750gb for right around $100
Otherwise you could buy a drive and an enclosure and do it yourself.
